Hackney named to All-MEAC first teamFormer Northwood two-sport standout Terrance Hackney was named to the All-Mideast Athletic Conference football team announced last weekend by the MEAC.As a 6-6, 310-pound sophomore offensive lineman for Bethune-Cookman, Hackney aided a dominating Wildcat offense this year that accounted for 4,235 yards of total offense including 2,722 yards on the ground.? Bethune-Cookman finished first in the MEAC in scoring offense (30.8 ppg), rushing offense (237.5 avg/g), and total offense (385.0 avg/g).? Hackney earned the conference's Offensive Lineman of the Week honor earlier this season.Last year, Hackney was named the All-MEAC second team and the College Sports Madness FCS All-American Third Team.Hackney played football and basketball at Northwood, helping both tams make excellent post-season playff runs, before spending a post-grad year at Hargrave Military Academy.BigTen gets another from the ACCGolfers at Governors Club played through cold and rain earlier this month in the sixth annual BigTen ? ACC Charity Golf Challenge, featuring teams of BigTen alumni and friends in competition against an ACC affinity squad.Governors Club punster Frank Livingston dubbed the field of 60 a ?Fraternity of Raining Champions?.Greg Fishel, a Penn State alum who graciously accepted accountability for the weather from up north, served as captain for the winning BigTen team. The ACC team was captained by former ?Voice of the Tar Heels? Woody Durham.In a team better ball match play format, the BigTen won for the third time in six tournaments, 162-38. The ACC group has won once and the there have been two ties.Nearly $2000 will be contributed equally to the BigTen-designated charity, CORA, the Chatham County food pantry. The Governors Club Chair in Pediatric Cardiology will also benefit with ACC team sponsorship.Governors Club features a 27-hole, Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course on the slopes of Edwards Mountain. Residency in the Governors Club community is not a requirement for membership, which has grown by more than 50 members in the current year.Carrboro Rec looking for volleyball coachesThe Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department is currently accepting volunteer coach?s applications for the 2013 Youth Girls Volleyball Program.Coaches must organize practices and communicate effectively with players (ages 10-13 years old), parents and Carrboro Recreation Department staff. They must also be able to teach proper playing skills and fundamentals, sportsmanship and provide an enjoyable atmosphere at practices and games.The deadline is Friday, Dec. 14. To receive a volunteer coach?s application or additional information, please contact the Recreation Department at 919-918-7376.Triangle United U17 brings home the goldThe Triangle United Soccer Association?s Under-17 club, guided by coach Kalla Stark, recently won a USYSA state championship. Play in the tournament, comprising 12 top teams from across North Carolina, began Oct. 27 in Asheville, where TUSA U17 Gold tied 1-1 in their first game against Charlotte Soccer Academy?s Predator and won their second game 4-0 against N.C. Soccer Fusion?s Premier Girls. The following weekend, the tournament continued in Mooresville, where TUSA girls won 3-0 against Lake Norman Soccer Club and earned a spot in the final four.Playing Nov. 10 in Wilson, TUSA Gold won its semifinal against Cape Fear Soccer Club, 1-0. Sunday?s game against North Carolina Soccer Fusion?s Elite Girls would prove to be a tough battle, resulting in a 2-1 win for the U17 Triangle United girls.
