Fed sends clearer signal on keeping rates low

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Federal Reserve sent its clearest signal to date Wednesday that it will keep interest rates super-low to support the U.S. economy even after the job market has improved significantly.

The Fed said it plans to keep its key short-term rate near zero until the unemployment rate reaches 6.5 percent or less ? as long as expected inflation remains tame. Unemployment is now 7.7 percent.

That plan adds detail to what the Fed had said before: that it expects to keep the rate low until at least mid-2015. For the first time, the Fed is making clear to investors and consumers that it will link its actions to specific economic markers.

"This approach is superior" to setting a timetable for a possible rate increase, Chairman Ben Bernanke said at a news conference. "It is more transparent and will allow the markets to respond quickly and promptly to changes" in the Fed's economic outlook.

Bernanke made clear that even after unemployment falls below 6.5 percent, the Fed might decide that it needs to keep stimulating the economy. Other economic factors will also shape its policy decisions, he said.

"The Fed has become more explicit and more transparent," said Steven Wood, chief economist at Insight Economics. "This should provide the markets with much more clarity around monetary policy action in the upcoming year."

In a statement after its final policy meeting of the year, the Fed said it will also keep spending $85 billion a month on bond purchases to drive down long-term borrowing costs and stimulate economic growth.

The Fed will spend $45 billion a month on long-term Treasury purchases to replace a previous bond-purchase program of an equal size. And it will keep buying $40 billion a month in mortgage bonds.

Those purchases, and the Fed's commitment to low rates, are intended to spur borrowing and spending in an economy still growing only modestly 3? years after the Great Recession ended.

Still, Bernanke warned that none of the Fed's actions could outweigh the economic pain that would be caused by sharp tax increases and government spending cuts that are set to kick in next month. The standoff between President Barack Obama and Republican lawmakers over how to resolve the "fiscal cliff" is already hurting the economy and threatens to push it into a recession next year, he said.

Fed policymakers are hopeful that the crisis can be resolved without significant long-term economic damage, Bernanke said. They foresee slightly faster growth next year and a gradual decline in unemployment.

Bernanke's comments about the impact of the fiscal cliff seemed to raise some concern among investors. Stocks had risen after the Fed's statement was released. But by the end of Bernanke's news conference, market averages were mixed. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down about 3 points. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose fractionally.

With its new purchases of long-term Treasurys, the Fed's investment portfolio, which is nearly $3 trillion, will swell to nearly $4 trillion by the end of 2013 if its bond purchase programs remain fully in place.

The Fed's plan to keep stimulating the economy at least until unemployment has reached 6.5 percent is intended to reassure consumers, companies and investors about the health of the economy, said Joseph Gagnon, a former Fed official who is a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Having only a target date of mid-2015 for any increase in interest rates "sounded gloomy," as if the economy would remain weak until then, Gagnon said. Specifying an unemployment rate ? one close to a normal rate of 6 percent or less ? makes clear that the Fed will keep supporting the economy even after the job market has strengthened significantly.

"This is trying to get away from that sense of 'Oh, my God, this is all about gloom and doom,' " Gagnon said.

The Fed's new plan to link any rate increase to specific levels of unemployment and inflation mirrors a proposal pushed by Charles Evans, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Updated forecasts that the Fed released Wednesday illustrate why it thinks it should continue helping the economy. It expects unemployment to remain at least 7.4 percent next year and 6.8 percent by the end of 2014. The earliest it sees unemployment dropping below 6.5 percent is the end of 2015.

It predicts the economy will grow no more than 3 percent next year before picking up to as much as 3.5 percent growth in 2014 and as much as 3.7 percent in 2015.

The Fed said it can pursue the aggressive stimulus programs because inflation remains below its target of roughly 2 percent annually over the long run. The statement said officials think the Fed can keep its benchmark short-term rate near zero as long as its one- to two-year inflation outlook doesn't exceed 2.5 percent.

The statement was approved 11-1. Jeffrey Lacker, president of Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, objected for the eighth straight time this year. Lacker has said he thinks the job market is being slowed by factors beyond the Fed's control. And he says further bond purchases risk worsening future inflation.

The latest bond-buying program would replace an expiring program called Operation Twist. With Twist, the Fed sold $45 billion a month in short-term Treasurys and used the proceeds to buy the same amount in longer-term Treasurys.

Twist didn't expand the Fed's investment portfolio, it just reshuffled the holdings. But the Fed has run out of short-term securities to sell. So to maintain its pace of long-term Treasury purchases and to keep long-term rates low, it must spend more and increase its portfolio.

The Fed's portfolio totals nearly $2.9 trillion ? more than three times its size before the 2008 financial crisis.

The Fed has launched three rounds of bond purchases since the financial crisis hit. In announcing a third program in September, the Fed said it would keep buying mortgage bonds until the job market improved substantially.

Skeptics note that rates on mortgages and many other loans are already at or near all-time lows. So any further declines in rates engineered by the Fed might offer little economic benefit.

But besides seeking to spur lending, the Fed's drive to cut rates has another goal: to induce investors to shift money out of low-yielding bonds and into stocks, which could lift stock prices. Stock gains boost wealth and typically lead individuals and businesses to spend and invest more. The economy would benefit.

Inside and outside the Fed, a debate has raged over whether the Fed's actions have helped support the economy over the past four years, whether they will ignite inflation later and whether they should be extended. But within the Fed, so far this year only Lacker has publicly dissented from the Fed's aggressive actions to aid the economy.

Japan's LDP, partner on track for two-thirds majority in polls

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its smaller ally could win a two-thirds majority in a December 16 election for parliament's lower house, a survey showed on Thursday, a result that would help break the policy deadlock plaguing the world's third-biggest economy.

Kyodo news agency's survey of more than 60,000 voters showed that former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's LDP could win about 295 seats in the 480-member chamber while its long-time coalition partner, the New Komeito, was likely to win close to 30 seats.

A two-thirds majority would allow the lower house to override the upper chamber, where no party has a majority and which can block legislation. That would help break a stalemate that has plagued successive governments since 2007.

Abe, who quit suddenly in 2007 after a troubled year in office, is promising to press the Bank of Japan to radically ease monetary policy to beat deflation and a strong yen.

He has also promised to stand tough against China over disputed isles in the East China Sea and wants to loosen the limits of Japan's 65-year-old pacifist constitution on the military while recasting what conservatives see as overly apologetic accounts of Japan's wartime past.

The newly launched, right-leaning Japan Restoration Party, founded by popular Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto and now headed by outspoken nationalist Shintaro Ishihara, looks set to win fewer than 50 seats, the poll showed.

Early predictions had suggested that the LDP might fall short of a majority even with the New Komeito's help, forcing it to turn to the JRP or other parties to form a government.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's Democratic Party of Japan, which swept to power in 2009 to end more than 50 years of almost non-stop rule by the LDP, may end up with as few as 60 seats, the Kyodo survey showed.

Kyodo said that about 40 percent of voters were still undecided with just days to go.

Analysts said some voters could decide not to vote for the LDP at the last minute out of fear that they would win by too large a margin, but the general trend was unlikely to shift direction.

"It's a much better than 50-50 chance that the LDP will win a majority on its own," said Chuo University political science professor Steven Reed.

A recent legal change prevents the opposition from taking the budget hostage by refusing to pass a funding bill, so the new government will find it easier to implement spending plans regardless of the size of its majority, and it can pressure the BOJ without enacting legislation.

Other legislation except the budget and treaties, however, must be approved by both houses of parliament. A bill rejected by the upper house can then be enacted if two-thirds of the lower chamber vote in favor.

Kyodo surveyed more than 63,000 voters in about a half of 300 single-member constituencies. The other 180 members come from proportional representation blocks.

kitchenware

Even if you?ve already checked off everything on your Christmas gift list, it?s worth paying attention to holiday sales to restock and upgrade your kitchen.

The deals this time of year can be spectacular. Last year, Frugal Foodie got a Calphalon Unison pan duo, regularly $300, for $100 at Williams Sonoma.

That?s a 66% discount! (The same deal is in play again this year, too.)

Based on assessments from price comparison and sale sites, here are some of the categories to browse for last-minute deals on kitchenware:

Cookware

DealNews.com says cookware one of the best things to buy in December, due to spillover from big November sales. Two of their picks: Cutlery sets and bakeware.

Walmart has a seven-piece Corningware Etch bakeware set for $30, which DealNews reports is $40 less than the next-cheapest price online.

Williams-Sonoma offers 25% off cookware with the code ?COOKWARE,? and Bon-Ton has up to 50% off, plus another 20% with code ?MILLIONDC12.?

Gourmet foods

On Free Shipping Day last year, food and drink was the most popular deals category, says Kendal Perez, deals expert for FreeShipping.org, which organizes the promo. (This year?s Free Shipping Day is Dec. 17.)

It?s not just free shipping ? there are often discounts, too. Harry & David deals include 25% select gifts or 20% off orders of $99 and up, as well as free shipping.

iGourmet has 5% off site-wide, and Teavana has $5 off $35 orders and $10 off $60.

Restaurant gift cards

As we pointed out in a recent Friday Meal Deals column, there are a lot of deals on gift cards?this time of year.

To name a few, get a $20 bonus card with $100 in Carraba?s gift cards, $10 with every $50 at Buca di Beppo gift card and $5 with every $25 at Boston Market gift card.

Check the sites of these family favorites for details and stock up. Just watch the terms ?- some of the bonus cards can only be used during certain dates.

Small appliances

A Decide.com study found small kitchen electrics get cheaper after Black Friday, in particular, blenders, juicers and microwaves.

By their estimates, blenders and juicers will be 16% cheaper in mid-December than over the Thanksgiving weekend, saving you an extra $16.50 on average, and microwaves are 10%, or $16, cheaper.

Right now, Kmart has up to 55% off small appliances, while Kohl?s has up to 50% off. Both stores also let you stack discount coupons.

?Of-the-month? clubs

It?s the rare time of year when new sign-ups can get discounts for themselves or gift recipients.

Harry & David currently offers up to 30% on various fruit-of-the-month clubs, Cellars Wine Club has 10% off and Popcorn Factory, 15% off its snack-of-the-month club.

The New York Times Wine Club has up to 15% off wine club gifts until Dec. 12, and throws in a free six-bottle wine tote on orders of more than $100.

(Not all wine clubs are good deals, though. See our piece on what to look for in a wine club.)

Cheese first made at least 7,500 years ago

LONDON (AP) ? Little Miss Muffet could have been separating her curds and whey 7,500 years ago, according to a new study that finds the earliest solid evidence of cheese-making.

Scientists performed a chemical analysis on fragments from 34 pottery sieves discovered in Poland to determine their purpose. Until now, experts weren't sure whether such sieves were used to make cheese, beer or honey.

Though there is no definitive test for cheese, Richard Evershed at the University of Bristol and colleagues found large amounts of fatty milk residue on the pottery shards compared to cooking or storage pots from the same sites. That suggests the sieves were specifically used to separate fat-rich curds from liquid whey in soured milk in a crude cheese-making process.

"It's a very compelling forensic argument that this was connected to cheese," Evershed said. "There aren't many other dairy processes where you would need to strain," he said. He and colleagues weren't sure what kind of milk was used, but said there were lots of cattle bones in the region. The study was published online Wednesday by the journal Nature.

"This is the smoking gun," said Paul Kindstedt, a professor of nutrition and food sciences at the University of Vermont and author of "Cheese and Culture." He was not involved in the study.

"It's almost inconceivable that the milk fat residues in the sieves were from anything else but cheese," Kindstedt said, adding that many experts suspected cheese was being made in Turkey up to 2,000 years earlier than this latest finding in Poland but that there was no definitive proof.

He said the discovery of cheese making marked a major development for Neolithic people and gave them a survival advantage by allowing them to turn milk into a form that provided essential calories, proteins and minerals. At that time, the adult population was largely lactose intolerant, so making a product with less lactose, like cheese, allowed everyone to digest the nutrients in milk.

Kindstedt said the earliest cheeses were likely similar to spreadable cheeses like ricotta and fromage frais. He guessed that people either ate them soon after they were made or buried them in pots for months afterwards, saving them for the winter when food was scarce.

Cheeses also served to spice up the Neolithic diet. "Food was incredibly dull and monotonous," Kindstedt said, noting the prehistoric farmers' dependence on grain porridge.

After being buried in the ground for months, he said, the cheeses would have been non-perishable, "bomb-proof" and pretty pungent.

"They probably would not be the first choice for a lot of people today," Kindstedt he said. "But I would still love to try it."

Lower Canada imports in October reflect weak economy

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's trade deficit came in much smaller than forecast in October as imports fell to a 15-month low, a sign the economy is still struggling to cope with weak foreign markets and other challenges.

Statistics Canada said on Tuesday that the deficit fell to C$169 million ($171 million) from a revised C$1.01 billion in September. Market operators had expected a C$1.20 billion shortfall.

Imports dropped by 1.2 percent to C$38.28 billion, the lowest level since the C$37.58 billion recorded in July 2011 and 5.7 percent under the record high of C$40.60 billion in June 2012. Most sectors posted declines and volumes decreased by 1.8 percent.

"The key in this report is what it says about broadly based import weakness as a reflection of the very soft Canadian economy over the second half of 2012," Toronto-Dominion Bank economist Derek Burleton said in a note to clients.

Canada's economy grew at a tepid 0.6 percent pace, annualized, in the third quarter, in large part because of weaker exports. Canadian exporters are struggling to cope with the European crisis, uncertainty over the U.S. "fiscal cliff" and a strong Canadian dollar.

Exports grew by 1.0 percent on higher shipments of farm, fishing and intermediate food products as well as crop products such as soybeans. Volumes were up by 0.3 percent.

"While trade looks as though it could add to Canadian GDP growth in the fourth quarter, the underlying story is less positive," said Benjamin Reitzes, senior economist at BMO Capital markets.

"Export growth remains weak, with the drop in imports providing all the boost. With the U.S. facing uncertainty driven by the fiscal cliff, Canadian exports will likely remain challenged into next year," he said in a note to clients.

Exports to the United States, which took 71.8 percent of all Canadian exports in October, dropped by 0.2 percent while imports grew by 1.6 percent. As a result, Canada's surplus with the United States dropped to C$2.77 billion from C$3.21 billion in September.

Peter Hall, chief economist at Export Development Canada, noted exports to the United States might have been higher had it not been for Hurricane Sandy, which hit the eastern U.S. seaboard in late October.

Year-on-year, he noted, exports in the crucial auto sector were up by 8.0 percent.

"I don't want to make it look brighter than it actually is ... (but) in light of the U.S. weakness I think these numbers are good," he told Reuters.

Markets focused on the smaller deficit -- the best performance since the C$378 million surplus in March -- and the Canadian dollar touched a more than 7-week high against its U.S. counterpart.

The currency hit C$0.9858 against the greenback, or $1.0144, after trading around C$0.9863, or $1.0139, heading into the report. It was the Canadian dollar's strongest level since October 19.

This week's sidebar poll: Are you gifting an Android device to someone this holiday season?

Nexus 7

'Tis the season in most of the western world, where we're spending time with our loved ones celebrating the year-end holiday. It's also the time when we traditionally exchange gifts, so that is the focus of our poll this week.

Google is knocking it out of the park price-wise with their Nexus devices, and OEMs are offering phones and tablets that do some amazing things. I know a lot of people would love to see a new phone or tablet with their name on it this month, but we're asking the folks doing the giving -- are giving someone an Android device this holiday season?

Hit the poll in the sidebar to the right or after the break, and let us know if you're handing out some sweet Android hardware, have everything covered without it, or just plain can't get one from Google. We'll let it simmer for a week then tally up the numbers.

Speaking of numbers, last week we asked who has seen a Google Play Gift Card in the wild. The vote was a mixed bag.

Poll

Looks like we're not the only one not seeing them in the store. Keep vigilant, or just enter to won one in our Stocking Stuffer contest.

Finding An Experienced Injury Attorney | Reference and Education

When you or a loved one is hurt in a car or truck accident, burned or injured by chemical exposure, hurt on a construction site, or simply frustrated by an insurance company that has refused to pay benefits that are owed, it's time you talked with a licensed injury lawyer. This article exists to help you better understand where to begin in the hunt for a good injury lawyer.

An accident or injury lawyer should be more than just "competent." The legal team that you select to represent you should be "remarkable". The personal injury lawyer you ultimately choose, should provide you with plenty of resources to help cope with all aspects of your case, answer your questions, prepare adequately for a trial, try your case (if need be) and always be prepared to argue intelligently on your behalf.

A remarkable law firm works daily to exceed your expectations. They will work to get you compensation to cover damages you have suffered, which may include but are not limited to, medical and surgical costs, lost work time (wages), anxiety, loss of consortium, pain and suffering, mileage and many out of pocket costs that you may face. Remarkable means following up with clients promptly. It means cultivating a reputation for being tough but fair, savvy and compassionate. A good law firm will make sure the clients feel comfortable, but at the same time, they need to send a message, loud and clear, to insurance companies and liable parties that they mean business. They are constantly building and using their credentials for the benefit of the clients.

Injury and accident victims often find themselves in a kind of shock after a traumatic event and do not always act swiftly enough. When a scary event disrupts everything in their world, it is only human nature to "wait a beat" to get your thoughts together before moving forward, but this is a dangerous approach and may not be the best idea. Here's the reason why: Evidence from the accident or injury may get lost or even be destroyed in the hours and days after the accident. Witness recollections will grow fainter and more inaccurate as time passes after the incident. Even your own memory of the event will give way to hazier, less accurate memories. And even worse, if you wait too long after the accident or injury, you may lose your ability to make a claim altogether, even if you have compelling evidence on your side, due to the "statute of limitations" in that state.

Every single personal injury case is unique and needs to be researched by an experienced injury lawyer. Choose an auto accident lawyer that will dedicate their time and attention to the task at hand, winning your case. Work with someone who will truly listen to what you want and need and help you feel relaxed, calm, comfortable, and taken care of throughout the duration of your case. These days, most injury law firms takes cases on a contingency basis. This means that until they win a trial verdict or reach a settlement, you do not pay a dime!

Elephant relocation scheme fails to prevent deaths

An attempt to save the lives of both elephants and people by moving the pachyderms away from humans has failed in Sri Lanka, a new study finds.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Tell us which geek gift gets the goods

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: What kind of holiday gift is best-suited for a science geek? Here's your chance to decide which geeky gift suggestion takes the prize.

    2. Scientist argues volcanoes killed dinosaurs
    3. Icebergs scoured Florida during Ice Age
    4. Human impact on planet: A geological era?

Instead of the relocated elephants living peacefully in their new homes, they wandered, researchers found. Relocated elephants died more often than problem elephants left in their original range. The relocated elephants also killed more people than elephants that stayed put.

"We were stunned that translocation neither solves the conflict nor saves elephants," study researcher Peter Leimgruber, a research scientist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, said in a statement.

Relocating elephants
Elephant-human conflicts are a big problem, as an incident on Nov. 4 illustrates. On that day, a herd of elephants reportedly ransacked three houses in the village of Dumurkota, India, guzzling a shop's reserves of a local alcoholic brew called mahua. ??

In Sri Lanka, about 70 people and 200 Asian elephants die each year as a result of human-pachyderm conflict, according to the Smithsonian. A common solution is to move the elephants to protected areas, such as national parks.

[ Elephant Images: Largest Beasts on Land ]

But a new study using GPS-enabled collars to track elephants found that relocating the animals did little good. The researchers followed 12 relocated male elephants and compared them with 12 male elephants left in their home ranges. All 24 elephants were "problem" elephants, meaning they had a history of conflict with humans.

Tragic ends
Two of the relocated elephants were killed in the national parks where they had been moved. The rest had wandered out of the park boundaries by 260 days after the release (some stayed around as little as a day). The wandering elephants either returned to their original range or settled somewhere new, but nearly all of them got tangled with humans again. Five of them died within eight months of the release. The relocated elephants were also responsible for killing five people in that time period.

The elephants left in their ranges didn't kill anyone, though one elephant was shot and killed.

There are only 35,000 to 50,000 Asian elephants left in the wild, making their conservation a priority. But conflicts stymie that goal, researchers said.

"As you track the elephants, you identify with these animals, you see their struggles and understand why they're doing the things that ultimately get them killed," Leimgruber said. "But you also understand that elephants represent a serious threat to humans and their livelihood."

The researchers suggest land-use plans that minimize crop-raiding might be more effective than moving elephants away.

Italy PM Monti says he will resign when budget passed

ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti announced on Saturday that he would resign once next year's budget is approved, two days after Silvio Berlusconi's party withdrew its parliamentary support for his technocrat government.

Only hours before the announcement, Berlusconi, who has stepped up attacks on Monti over recent weeks, said he would run to become premier for a fifth time on a platform that attacks the former European Commissioner's stewardship of the economy.

Parliament is already poised to pass the budget by Christmas, and so Monti's resignation probably brings the expected vote forward by no more than a month to February. Elections must follow no more than 70 days after President Giorgio Napolitano dissolves parliament.

Monti's move turns the tables on Berlusconi, who seemed to have once again seized a political opportunity to keep his party in the political game just a year after being forced to resign amid a sex scandal and a debt crisis.

It will also increase speculation that he could be eyeing a run as a candidate in the election himself.

At a conference in France earlier, Monti, widely credited with restoring Italy's international credibility after the scandal-plagued Berlusconi era, appeared to take aim at Berlusconi, warning against "populism".

He said Italy should not go back to where it was when he took over for Berlusconi a year ago.

Following a two-hour meeting with Napolitano, he warned that not approving the budget "would render more serious the government crisis, also at a European level," and said that after it is approved, his resignation would be "irrevocable".

Leaders of both Berlusconi's center-right People of Freedom (PDL) party and the center-left Democratic Party (PD), which is leading in the opinion polls, said they were willing to accelerate the passage of the budget.

"Faced with the irresponsibility of the right that betrayed a commitment it made a year ago before the whole country... Monti responded with an act of dignity that we profoundly respect," said PD leader Pier Luigi Bersani.

"We are ready to approve the budget in the fastest possible manner," he said in a statement.

"RECESSIVE SPIRAL"

Italians will vote in the middle of a severe economic crisis, with a recession that began mid-way through last year showing no signs of abating, a massive public debt and unemployment at 11.1 percent, a record high.

With the support of a cross-party alliance including both the PD and the PDL, Monti imposed tax hikes and spending cuts to bring borrowing costs under control and undertook a series of reforms to improve the competitiveness of the economy.

But Berlusconi said on Wednesday that the former economics professor's austerity policies had left Italy facing a "recessive spiral without end".

The PDL withdrew parliamentary support for Monti on Thursday, driving up the difference between German and Italian benchmark bonds by about 30 basis points.

"On Monday morning the markets will judge this latest outburst by Berlusconi and they certainly will not judge it positively," PD vice president Enrico Letta commented. Letta added that elections now were likely in February.

Berlusconi's center-right PDL lags the PD by at least 16 percentage points in opinion polls, and also trails the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, which has surged to prominence on a tide of public anger against the mainstream political class.

Monti's move will fuel speculation over whether he intends to run to lead the country next year once he has resigned. So far he has said he will step in only if the election result is unclear, but there has been growing speculation he could join forces with a centrist group.

Financial markets have been closely watching the political upheaval in Italy and many in the business establishment have hoped for a second term from Monti.

However Berlusconi, Italy's most proved election campaigner, said that he would not give in easily.

"I race to win," Berlusconi told reporters at the practice field for AC Milan, the soccer club he controls.

"To win, everyone said there had to be a tested leader. It's not that we did not look for one. We did, and how! But there isn't one... I'm doing it out of a sense of responsibility."

The media magnate has ample resources to back his bid - the country's biggest television network, its biggest magazine publisher and a family-owned newspaper.

Echoing comments by the leader of the 5-Star Movement, Beppe Grillo, Berlusconi criticized the single currency earlier this year and has slammed Germany's influence on European policy.

In his blog, Grillo said Berlusconi is running for office because he knows the average Italian "is literally terrified about the prospects of five more years of Monti-like rule".

Mandela hospitalized for tests 'consistent with his age'

From prisoner to liberator, Nelson Mandela's fight for equality in South Africa serves as a shining example of justice and peace. Here's a look at the pivotal moments in the life of South Africa's first black president.

By Reuters

JOHANNESBURG -- Former South African president Nelson Mandela was admitted to hospital on Saturday for medical tests, although the government said there was no cause for alarm.

A statement from President Jacob Zuma's office gave no details of the condition of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader.

"Former President Mandela will receive medical attention from time to time which is consistent with his age," the statement said.

"President Zuma assures all that Madiba is doing well and there is no cause for alarm," it added, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

Mandela, who became South Africa's first black president after the country's first all-race elections in 1994, was admitted to hospital in February because of abdominal pain but released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing seriously wrong with him.

He has since spent most of his time in his ancestral home in Qunu, a village in the impoverished Eastern Cape province.

His frail health prevents him from making any public appearances in South Africa, although in the last few months he has continued to receive high-profile visitors, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton.?

Twitter Reacts to Carson Palmer's Struggles, Raiders' Loss to Broncos

The Oakland Raiders fell to 3-10 on the season with Thursday night's 26-13 loss to the Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos.

While his stats didn't end up looking so terrible?completing 19-of-30 passes for 273 yards, two touchdowns and one interception?disapproval of Carson Palmer is starting to pick up steam.

With virtually no running game to lean on, Palmer is actually putting together a respectable season. But the NFL has taught us that no matter how good or bad a situation is, the quarterback either receives all the praise or shoulders most of the blame as it relates to his team's performance.

The Raiders are currently in the midst of a bad situation.

Here is some of that criticism shown on Twitter throughout the game on Thursday night.

?

?

The Raiders gave up their first-round pick in 2012 and a second-round pick in 2013 (since Oakland failed to reach the AFC title game in either year) to the Bengals for Palmer's services.

Oakland's head coach at the time was Hue Jackson, who is now Cincinnati's secondary and assistant special teams coach.

?

?

Palmer is obviously the scapegoat in Oakland, no matter how bad the other phases of the game look.

?

Though Palmer's overall performance this season has been solid, he is a statue when forced to move around or escape the pocket.

?

While this doesn't tell the whole story on Palmer, the Raiders are sure to make changes in advance of next season. Is the veteran quarterback part of the rebuild in Oakland?

Edmonton fans break the 10,000 plateau at Teddy Bear Toss during Oil Kings game [Photos] [Video]

Report an error

EDMONTON?-?

It was raining bears.

It never rains bears in Latvia.

?It feels great,? said Edgars Kulda, the 18-year-old rookie Edmonton Oil Kings who made it rain.

?That was one of the best things I?ve felt in my life,? added the kid who scored the first goal of the game to bring on 10,835 bears from above at the sixth annual Teddy Bear Toss at 2:00 of the first period before 12,575 fans, the largest crowd of the season and the most to ever watch a major junior game against Calgary in the building.

?I?m sure nothing like that has ever happened in Latvia. Some of the bears bounced off my head. That felt great, too. I?ve never seen anything like that. It was a great, great experience for me,? raved the left winger from Riga.

Can you imagine a kid from Latvia not only seeing that, not only experiencing that on the ice, but being responsible for that?

Talk about something being totally foreign.

Heck, it was totally foreign to your correspondent.

Along with 13-year-old grandson James, we arranged to have the worst seats in the house for the hockey game between the Calgary Hitmen and the Oil Kings.

Section 119. Row 3. Seats 21-22.

That?s on the glass right behind the Calgary bench.

More bears bounced off my head than bounced off Kulda?s noggin. And he had a helmet.

It might have been a lousy seat to watch a hockey game. But it was the best seat in the house to experience a Teddy Bear Toss.

It was also a foreign experience for most of the fans in the stands who gave the Oil Kings their largest crowd of the season and their largest ever crowd for a game against Calgary.

The fur finally flew in Edmonton!

Brett Breitkreuz, Michael Burns, Lane Webowski and Mitch Moroz had scored the first goal of games in the first five editions (you?re right, that?s four ? in 2010 the last place Kings were shutout in the game). But even those guys hadn?t experienced something like Kulda did as the bears rained down.

Edmonton finally became part of it this year with a little help from sponsors Dodge, Shaw and Global, who seeded some of the seats with a few donated bears of their own to give everyone extra ammunition.

The fuzzy, furry bears and other stuffed animals made the trip from Rexall Place to Santa?s Anonymous. The others will be bound for hospitals around Northern Alberta between now and the next time the relatively young Christmas tradition, which has totally taken off in the Western Hockey League, comes to town.

It wasn?t the 21,463 bears 16,921 Calgary fans tossed on the ice last Sunday or the world-record 26,919 bears a Calgary crowd of 18,105 produced in 2008.

No matter how you score it, the bear facts are that there were 10,835 bears in the air and 12,575 fans in the stands and that makes Edmonton a Teddy Bear Toss player of some stature, finally.

In the first five years the Oil Kings have been doing this there had been a mere 15,764. Total! That?s an average of 3,149 per bear toss.

Going into the game the Oil Kings had averaged 6,283 fans per game through 17 games. (They drew 5,273 on the 18th last year.) That represented an increase of 1,277 fans per game. That was good for the league?s largest jump in attendance at 25.5% with Kamloops second at 20% and Saskatoon as Memorial Cup host city sitting third up 16%.

This night all those fans were introduced to young Mr. Kulda, who is a pretty good story without having launched the first great bear flyover here.

?I didn?t think twice about coming to Edmonton. I know Kristians Pelss,? he said of the Latvian trailblazer to the team who is an Oilers draft choice, former Oil King and now an Oklahoma City Baron.

?I came because the WHL is the best junior league in the world and it?s a great team that picked me,? he said.

He could have had a better bear celebration, but it?s hard to do one with so many bears covering the ice.

?The other guys on the team were talking about what kind of celebration they?d do if they scored the goal,? said Kulda.

?I didn?t say anything. I wasn?t thinking it would be me who scored it. All I could think of doing when I did was twirling my stick around.

?I just tried to get my best shot away,? he said of the picking up a loose puck in the slot, waiting out Calgary netminder Chris Driedger and roofing it.

?All these teddy bears! What a great Christmas present!? said Kulda as I conducted an interview in the walkway behind the bench while an entire fleet of red Dodge trucks was loaded with the crash-landing bruins from above.

Indeed, the bears Kulda brought on will make great Christmas presents for so many.

Researchers from the University of Bonn have discovered adverse effects of Bisphenol A on calcium channels

Bisphenol A, a substance found in many synthetic products, is considered to be harmful, particularly, for fetuses and babies. Researchers from the University of Bonn have now shown in experiments on cells from human and mouse tissue that this environmental chemical blocks calcium channels in cell membranes. Similar effects are elicited by drugs used to treat high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia. The results are now presented in the journal "Molecular Pharmacology."

The industrial chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is worldwide extensively utilized for manufacturing polycarbonates and synthetic resins. "This substance has been shown to affect the hormonal system and may have negative effects on the function of enzymes and carrier proteins," reports Prof. Dr. Dieter Swandulla from the Institute of Physiology II at the University of Bonn. BPA is associated with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and neurological dysfunction. "It seems that fetuses and newborns are particularly sensitive to BPA," adds the physiologist. Due to its unpredictable effects, the EU Commission banned the use of BPA in baby bottles in 2011 as a precaution.

Bisphenol A blocks multiple essential calcium channels

The team of researchers around Prof. Swandulla now reports that BPA reversibly blocks calcium channels essential for cell function in mouse and human cells. Calcium ions flowing through these pore-like so-called channel proteins into living cells, control e.g. the contraction of heart muscle cells, the activity of enzymes, and the communication of nerve cells with each other. "Drugs such as those used to treat high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia on the one hand, and neurotoxins, such as heavy metals, on the other hand act on exactly the same calcium channels," explains the physiologist from the University of Bonn. "This indicates that BPA can indeed have adverse effects on human health." Since BPA binds to the calcium channels reversibly, there is at least the possibility of the chemical being eliminated from the body.

Bisphenol A and its derivatives are ubiquitous

Nowadays BPA and its related substances can be detected almost everywhere in the environment. Effective doses are found in CD's, paper money, thermal paper, food cans, dental fillings and flame retardants, even in the breathing air and in house dust. Humans are meanwhile chronically exposed to these compounds. "This is why it would be desirable to completely stop the production of BPA," says Prof. Swandulla. "Due to the high-volume production and its widespread occurrence, it would, however, take a very long time to remove this chemical from the environment and the human organism." Consequently, alternatives to BPA should be utilized which are harmless to humans and other organisms.
