GameStick reveals final backer-aided design, dock for peripherals

Gamestick reveals final backeraided design

Now that the Android-powered game console on a stick, GameStick, has been fully funded (five times over), another piece of the puzzle is falling into place: its final design. Taking suggestions from the Kickstarter backers that supported the device in the first place, the final design of the controller reflects, "a more ergonomic form with extended grips and a tapered shape to better sit in the hand." The HDMI stick that previous popped out from the bottom of the controller now rests around back -- it's now got a MicroSD slot built in as well, allowing up to 32GB of expandable memory (bringing the maximum of expandable memory up to 104GB -- that's a lot of Android games).

A docking station is also in the cards, which enables a whole mess of peripherals via USB, HDMI, and ethernet ports -- it's powered separately, so you can charge your GameStick controller without having to turn on the console. You can also charge your controller on it wirelessly, according to PlayJam. All said, it's got one ethernet port, a full size SD card reader, three USB ports, and three HDMI ports (one out, two in), and comes as part of an option $109 bundle on the Kickstarter page. As for its sale price separately from the GameStick, PlayJam's staying mum for now.

GAMESTICK UNVEILS FINAL DESIGN INSPIRED BY KICKSTARTER COMMUNITY

London & San Francisco; January 29th, 2013; As the GameStick Kickstarter campaign (http://kck.st/12SSvMO) enters its final few days, the team announce their final designs of the device as well as a new docking station for every peripheral conceivable.

GameStick; Kickstarter´s most recent success story, currently sits at over 500% of its original target with over $500K raised at the time of writing. The team waits on tenterhooks to discover the final figure to be revealed at 04:23 PST on Friday 1st February.

"It´s hard to believe that we launched GameStick just a few short weeks ago. The Kickstarter campaign has been a roller coaster of a ride and one which has given us more feedback than we could ever have possibly imagined." says PlayJam´s CMO, Anthony Johnson, "We have been able to take that input and literally better shape our product to give our backers a truly bespoke creation - one which has been designed by the Kickstarter community that backed it."

The new design sees subtle changes to the controller, which gets a more ergonomic form with extended grips and a tapered shape to better sit in the hand. The housing for the HDMI stick has been moved to the rear of the controller and the stick itself now supports an expandable 32GB MicroSD card slot in response to overwhelming demand. The finish has also been meticulously designed meet the highest of standards.

Additional requests from the backer community resulted last week in the GameStick team announcing support for peripheral hardware through a previously unspecified docking station. The dock brings on board a number of sought after features such as; wire-free charging for the controller, a number of USB and HDMI ports to support peripheral hardware such as keyboards, mice, microphones and cameras as well as support for yet more storage bringing the total potential capacity of the bundle up to 104GB.

"The GameStick Dock is a prime example of how we have moved rapidly to innovate while still in the pre-production phase," continued Johnson, "it has made for a 'hairy' 30 days but we think the results are worth it and we are delighted that we have been able to tailor the product as much as we have in such a short time-frame"

The GameStick Kickstarter campaign has reached its first two stretch goals with just under $60K to go to hit it´s third and final stretch which will add a number of colour options to its range; a target the team hopes to hit before close. Backers have been urged to vote for their favourite colours on the GameStick Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/GameStickNews) in a poll to establish the final color.

92% Amour

All Critics (140) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (129) | Rotten (11)

As remarkable as Haneke's films are, not a one has been as transcendently generous as Amour, which is nominated for five Academy Awards, including best picture, best director and best foreign-language film.

"Amour" isn't just a great movie, it's a movie that may actually do you some good.

Shot in long, static takes, Amour stares directly into the indignities of old age and the curse of a slow death.

Each actor draws on a lifetime's worth of experience, performing with grace and rare, uncompromising realism.

There's nowhere to hide: The film cuts no corners and stings with the authenticity of life's fragility.

This is beautiful film, and a terrible one: devastating to stick out, and yet one of the most remarkable romances ever made...

One of the ten best films of 2012.

Amour may not inspire the kind of emotional epiphany that similar illness-driven dramas tend to, the results are still riveting.

Death is part of love's bargain, and Haneke lays this fact bare.

It is hard to recommend Amour. Austrian director Michael Haneke's film cannot justly be described as entertaining, and it will likely leave you sad and weary. But it is a film you must see.

"Amour" isn't easy to watch, but its rewards are many.

"Amour" isn't a fun time out at the movies, and I kind of doubt I'll ever see it again. But it's an amazingly act, absolutely heartbreaking film.

A viewer may want to watch Amour, because it is a work of art.

A bitter, pitiless piece of work. We can admire its components, but we're repulsed by its vision.

Haneke's self-indulgent approach is getting old to me. His devoted fans will like it, but others will most likely be scratching their heads trying to figure out how this got a Best Picture nomination.

It's upsetting material lined with lead by Haneke, who searches for the meaning of love but can't help but dwell on the details of decay.

Amour is as heartbreaking and real as it gets.

"Shooting Straight" panels take WWE fans behind the curtain during Royal Rumble weekend

PHOENIX ? It wasn?t long after Michael Cole politely reminded the members of D-Generation X that WWE is now in a post?Attitude Era during their ?Shooting Straight? panel that Triple H fired out a word that would have had network executives pulling out their hair had it been uttered during a live Raw broadcast.

From that moment on, it was clear that WWE?s new ?Shooting Straight? panels were going to be every bit as uncensored as the advertisements promised.

Introduced to the WWE Universe as part of Royal Rumble?s Fan Fest weekend, the three sessions ? which focused on 1997?s Montreal Screwjob, D-Generation X and WCW ? gave an intimate crowd of WWE fans the opportunity to hear inside stories about some of the most pivotal moments in sports-entertainment history from the men who lived them. (PHOTOS)

?I think it?s something we should have done a long time ago,? Booker T told WWE.com shortly after participating in Sunday?s WCW panel. ?Letting our fans get a chance to ask those questions they?ve been wanting to ask for years and getting a true answer from someone who was there ? I think it?s priceless.?

It was early Saturday night when WWE Hall of Famers Shawn Michaels, Bret ?Hit Man? Hart and Jerry ?The King? Lawler sat down with Michael Cole to discuss the infamous events of the 1997 Survivor Series. Although it has been nearly 16 years since the most notorious night in WWE history, it was clear that the controversies of that evening still resonate with WWE fans. As for HBK and Hart, both have matured considerably and have let go of any animosity. Still, The Excellence of Execution took pleasure in graphically describing the loogie he spit in Mr. McMahon?s face seconds after he was conned out of the WWE Title.

?That was like a 10 egg white omelet,? the ?Hit Man? said with a laugh.

The next panel got just as messy as D-Generation X members Shawn Michaels, Triple H, X-Pac, Billy Gunn and The Road Dogg got together with Michael Cole to reminisce about the most anti-authority group in WWE history. In between crude jokes and bouts of riotous laughter, The Game revealed that he was nearly paired up with The Honky Tonk Man before DX took off. Another untold tale aired out for those in attendance was how, following DX?s infamous ?attack? on WCW in Norfolk, Va., a subsequent invasion of WCW?s Atlanta headquarters nearly got the boys thrown in jail.

?They called the police and told them they were under attack from a militia group,? Triple H said, still in disbelief. ?A hundred cops came with riot squads!?

The weekend?s final panel got underway on Sunday morning when former WCW competitors Booker T, Big Show, X-Pac and Kevin Nash talked??with moderator Matt Striker about the rise of The New World Order and The Monday Night War. As expected, nothing was left unsaid as Nash revealed that Sting was nearly the third man to join the original nWo and that the reckless Goldberg was his least favorite competitor to face. On the topic of Goldberg, X-Pac added that the former WCW Champion wanted to call himself ?The Hybrid? before his impressive winning streak began.

By the time the WCW panel ended, it was clear that WWE had taken a revolutionary step in inviting the audience behind the scenes. For the traditionally guarded world of professional wrestling, it?s a major shift, but one that is welcome.

?Whoever came up with this idea is an absolute genius, because the goal of WWE is to grow and I saw children out there who don?t remember The nWo and now they?re going to go back and learn about them,? Striker told WWE.com.

If you weren?t able to be in Phoenix for the first ?Shooting Straight? panels, don?t fret. Chances are WWE will be bringing these innovative sessions to your town in the near future.

?I think it was a hit,? The Game said during the final moments of the DX panel. ?And I think it?s something we?re going to do more often.??

In December 2012, Power surveyed over 3,000 auto insurance clients who had settled a claim in the previous six months. Power excluded respondents who had solely filed roadside assistance claims, as well as those whose cars had sustained damage to the glass or windshield only. The study also excluded respondents whose vehicles had been stolen, since the claims process in those cases can often require a longer settlement period.?

Power asked respondents to score their insurance company on a range of criteria (not all of which applied in every case): "first notice of loss; claim service interaction; damage appraisal; repair process; rental experience; and settlement". Respondents assigned scores in each of those areas on a scale of 0 to 1,000.

The good news is that overall satisfaction has climbed six points since 2011, to an average of 861. Power attributes the boost to increased satisfaction on the settlement front, where consumers' average score was 11 points higher than in 2011. Folks were also happier with the fairness of their settlements and the timing of those settlements.

Customers are probably happier about those settlements because they've been sped up. In fact, Power found that the average time that it took for agencies to pay out claims fell from 16.4 days in 2011 to 13.9 days in 2012. When looking solely at total-loss claims, the numbers were even better: in 2012, it took agencies 18.5 days to pay out total-loss claims, a drop of 5.1 days compared to 2011. Faster service means happier customers.

That said, there's definitely room for improvement -- particularly on the repair front. The average length of time needed for auto repairs climbed from 12.3 days in 2011 to 13.5 days in 2012. And while 91% of vehicles were fixed right the first time in 2011, in 2012 that figure slipped to 89%. Not surprisingly, satisfaction with the repair process edged down two points in 2012, resting at 862.

These problems could eventually bleed over to cast a pall over the entire claims process. Jeremy Bowler, the senior director of the insurance practice at J.D. Power and Associates, says that?"While insurers have made significant progress in the past 12 months to improve the efficiency of the claims process, the repair providers have not kept pace. Failure to repair a vehicle correctly is critical to the customer experience as average satisfaction scores tumble over one hundred points for those who had to bring their vehicle back for repeat repairs."

What's remarkable to us is that overall satisfaction climbed during a period in which two natural disasters struck the U.S.: Hurricane Isaac, which hit the Gulf Coast in August 2012, and Hurricane Sandy, which slammed into the Northeast two months later. Although Power didn't comment on the number of respondents with vehicles damaged in those storms, for insurers to satisfy customers so quickly during that time -- all while setting up?impromptu?field offices to manage claims from victims -- seems impressive.

Mercury treaty adopts legal framework welcomed by Arctic ...

The Inuit Circumpolar Council says it is pleased with progress made in efforts to reduce global mercury levels.

Early this week, more than 140 countries adopted a global mercury treaty at the United Nations Environment Programme meetings in Geneva, Switzerland.

The treaty includes legally binding and voluntary measures to regulate mercury emissions, the related health aspects and other concerns.

Mercury is a poison released into the air, water and land from small-scale artisanal gold mining, coal-powered plants, and from discarded electronic or consumer products such as thermostats, batteries and paints.

Because mercury concentrates and accumulates in fish and goes up the food chain, it poses the greatest risk of nerve damage to pregnant women, women of child-bearing age and young children.

Over the years in the Arctic, mercury levels have been rising. Inuit consume mercury when they eat country food like beluga and ringed seal.

The council has been pushing for tougher regulations in countries where mercury is coming from.

This story is posted on Alaska Dispatch as part of Eye on the Arctic, a collaborative partnership between public and private circumpolar media organizations.

You need to be interested in employing Online marketing if you are sincere about your business venture. Do not doubt the truth of this statement. Your company could rise or fall based solely on your whether you have implemented a sound Internet promotion strategy. The following tips can ensure that you get the most out of the efforts you devote to Internet marketing.

One way to become an authority or subject-matter expert is to compile a relevant glossary on your website. This is a great tool for both current and prospective customers. People doing a search for those terms will be more likely to come to your website. You will get more traffic and be considered a reference.

Minimize the use of tools like Flash or AJAX. It may be aesthetically pleasing, but it will not add additional search engine results. If you want to employ Flash, use it sparingly and make sure you have plenty of other keywords and navigational tools available.

TIP! Figuring out your niche for your business is key to market on the Internet. Since there are no geographical constraints, you could easily reach out to a very small target audience.

It?s important not to become too reliant on one venue or source of income when engaged in Internet promotion. This is key when because income will vary in the beginning and may not be sufficient at first until you are more established. Keep your primary job until you are absolutely certain it is safe for you to give it up.

Keep in mind what your audience will be expecting when they come to your site. If you can figure out what they want, you will get more sales. Ask people you trust for opinions on your website. You can even ask some of your online friends to check it out or ask for feedback from forum members. Really research what would make an excellent site that delivers to your target market.

Deal with complaints personally. You should strive to handle all customer complaints yourself as this way you know when they have been resolved. Always respond to complaint emails yourself and with a solution to that complaint.

TIP! Make sure your customers know they can opt out of receiving email from you at any time. This is essential to today?s online world of unwanted opinions and spam.

Make sure that you implement all sorts of different software to make your Affiliate marketing strategy as successful as possible. If your customers use more advanced software than you do, they will wonder why you haven?t upgraded. On the other hand, if you demonstrate a willingness to take risks and employ cutting-edge business tactics, customers will respect your innovative practices.

Do some research to find out which types of Internet marketing are working for your competitors. For example, you may find that some of the best ways to go about marketing your site won?t cost you a single penny. But unless you?re first taking the time to really think about it, you may end up paying money for nothing. There are many ways to get people to come to your site. It just requires a little creativity.

Every image that appears on your website should have its own caption. Search engines use captions to help determine if a site is relevant to a user?s search. With good captions on your images, your site can raise in search engine rankings.

TIP! Long before site ranking becomes a concern for you, you need to build yourself an outstanding website. Creating a well-designed website is an essential first step for your business.

Do not use spam. Web crawlers, which quickly post hundreds or thousands of comments in a short amount of time, rarely produce the desired effect for your business. As a matter of fact if you are generic with advertising potential customers may be driven off.

Within businesses, those who are authoritative in their fields are widely respected. Don?t be afraid to let it be known that you are indeed the head honcho. You can refer to yourself as the ?President? or ?CEO? of your company.

Marketing your business wisely on the Internet is no longer an option but a requirement. It cannot be avoided or ignored by anyone who does business online. By following these steps you can ensure that you have every opportunity for your business to succeed.

TIP! You should be very careful about the information you are giving customers when you are marketing a small business. Do your best to write original and relevant content.

Should I take out PPI? | FinanceDogma - Finance, loans, creditcard ...

Should I take out PPI?

Whether you should take out payment protection insurance can be a more difficult solution than it may seem. You may think that all PPI is bad and it should never be considered. It is not surprising that people do have this attitude in light of all the PPI scandal and PPI claims that are being made at the moment. However, they are not happening because there is something wrong with PPI but only the way that it was sold.

So if you have any sort of a loan, then you should consider whether you want to take out payment protection insurance. You should consider whether you would like to cover the risk of not being able to make your repayments. The policies do vary so you need to think if you want help if you are unwell, can?t work or whatever and make sure that the policy covers you for this.

It is worth considering how much the policy will cost you for the duration of the loan. Think about how much money you will spend in total and decide whether you think that this will be worth it. It is worth considering what else you could spend that money on as well as the likelihood that you would need to make a claim. Some people like the peace of mind that it gives them and would rather pay the money for that. Others are happy to take the risk, perhaps because they have savings they could use to cover the repayments or another income coming in to the household which would help.

Each person is different in how secure they feel and how much risk they want to take. It will also depend on the loan. If it is a mortgage and your house will be repossessed if you cannot keep up repayments due to losing a job, then you could be left with nowhere to live. However, you may feel you have enough money to cover a few months, you feel the bank would be happy to negotiate a few payment holidays and you have another income to help out with the household bills. However, if you are solely responsible, have family living in the house and no savings, then the idea of having the house taken away could be a lot more scary.

So it is worth thinking about your own personal circumstances when considering PPI rather than worrying about things that have happened to other people in the past.

Nutrition | JOE's Healthy treats: The Hamburger

Eating healthy is key, it's what will help you shed or gain those pounds that you're working hard for in the gym. But it can be pretty boring, right? Let's change that.

By Adrian Collins

January is here, so that means we're raiding our cupboards throwing out the half eaten packets of crisps and leftover mince pies that we've been fuelling ourselves on over the Christmas.

So instead of eating plain porridge and brown rice for the next few weeks, we here at JOE are going to help you make your favourites that little bit healthier.

Remember, nutrition will account for about 80% of the goal you want to achieve, the other 20% comes from the exercise and effort in the gym or out running, so it makes more sense to fuel your sessions than to use your sessions to burn off food.

But that's no reason to miss out on something delicious. Let's turn that hamburger into a gym fuelling super food.

Here are some tips to remember when knocking this together: Firstly pick your bun wisely. A brown or wholemeal roll will always be better than a white bread bap with lots of sugar, and you don't sacrifice any flavour. Lob some spinach on instead of lettuce for extra greens.

Secondly, easy on the extras. Cheese is fine once it's good quality and not processed stuff, but bacon and onion rings are extra calories that distract from the taste of the meat, which is pretty good anyway.

A sneaky tip to get melted cheese looking like they do in restaurants is, once you've placed the cheese on the burger, throw some water on the pan or barbecue then cover it with a lid. The steam cooks the cheese on top of the burger and melts it to make it look it's picture-perfect best.

Put some cooked onions into your meat mix too, it keeps the burger juicy and makes it taste much nicer. Try to also get lean, good quality meat, it makes a difference to your taste buds!

You can also try throwing some chillies in the mix, they boost your metabolic rate and help you burn fat.

When it comes to sauces, mayo is often an option that contains a huge amount of calories for the taste that it adds. Ketchup and mustard (which you can get in a variety of options like low-sodium etc.) will beef up the taste, or even throw in a barbecue sauce for a smoky flavour that compliments the meat well.

Remember, eating healthy isn't a mystery or a crazy super-science, it's common sense. Thanks to hard-working scientists, we now know that chips cooked in oil are delicious, but they're not a life-giving super food, and it's not a good idea to eat them all the time.

But we also know that a burger has to come with fries, that's something we refuse to budge on. So swap the deep fried for a few oven-roasted sweet potatoes, a delicious alternative.

Add in some broccoli (which also fights cancer while you're at it) and some green beans, and you've got a much healthier meal to chow down on. In fact, this recipe was so good we made one ourselves, and it was up there with the best burgers we've ever eaten.

There you have it, a few simple steps that can make your burger guilt free and turn it into muscle fuel.

Owl monkeys who 'stay true' reproduce more than those with multiple partners

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Breaking up is hard to do ? and can be detrimental to one's reproductive fitness, according to a new University of Pennsylvania study.

Focusing on wide-eyed, nocturnal owl monkeys, considered a socially monogamous species, the research reveals that, when an owl monkey pair is severed by an intruding individual, the mate who takes up with a new partner produces fewer offspring than a monkey who sticks with its tried-and-true partner.

The findings underscore how monogamy and pair-bonds ? relatively rare social formations among mammals ? can benefit certain individuals, with potential implications for understanding how human relationship patterns may have evolved.

Eduardo Fernandez-Duque and Maren Huck report on the research in PLOS ONE. Fernandez-Duque is an associate professor in Penn's Department of Anthropology. Huck completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Fernandez-Duque's laboratory and is now a professor at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom.

Since 1997, Fernandez-Duque and colleagues have monitored an owl monkey population in a portion of Argentina's Chaco region. Their behavioral observations, demographic data and physiological sampling have provided a wealth of information on the animals.

"We have managed over the years to have quite significant sample sizes for a study of wild non-human primates," Fernandez-Duque said. "These findings are possible because we have a combination of intense demographic monitoring year-round that allows us to notice when a male is missing, when a female is missing or when there's a new adult in the group. We couple this with intense behavioral monitoring that allows us to document the details of fights or the whole process of mate replacement."

The current study amasses data from 16 years of observation of 18 owl monkey groups, a total of 154 animals. Owl monkeys live in monogamous groups consisting of an adult male, an adult female and their offspring. The juveniles disperse from the group around age 3 or 4.

In 2008, Fernandez-Duque and colleagues published a paper reporting, for the first time, the presence of a so-called "floater" individual, which attacked the male in a pair and essentially replaced him as a mate and infant-care provider.

The Penn team now demonstrates that this usurping of mates by both male and female floaters is a common occurrence. The researchers documented 27 female and 23 male replacements in the groups they observed.

The replacements often involved dramatic fights, some of which ended fatally for the evicted individual.

"These is high-stake competition for a reproductive position," Fernandez-Duque said.

By following pairs and observing replacements, Fernandez-Duque and Huck show that having a partner evicted harms the reproductive success of the remaining mate. Owl monkeys with one partner produced 25 percent more offspring per decade than those with two or more partners.

"What we're showing is that if you manage to stay with the same partner you produce more infants than if you're forced to change partners," Fernandez-Duque said.

The reason for this significant impact on the reproductive success of the remaining partner is not yet completely clear, but the researchers surmise that it may have to do with a delay in reproduction due to the fact that female owl monkeys in Argentina typically only conceive between March and May. It's also possible the delay occurs because the two individuals take time to assess one another before reproducing, given the significant commitment to infant care that both males and females make.

The results demonstrate that, for owl monkeys, long-term monogamy and pair-bonding improves reproductive fitness. The finding helps explain previous research by Fernandez-Duque's group, which has shown that male owl monkeys invest significantly in raising their offspring.

"Monogamy makes sense for these primates, because the male who sticks to a female is certain about the paternity of the young, and so he invests in their care," he said. "The female benefits from shared provisioning of care which may help her reduce the burden of pregnancy and lactation."

Fernandez-Duque's studies of owl monkeys in Argentina and his collaborative research on monogamous titi and saki monkeys of Ecuador are helping scientists understand the ecological and biological factors that gave rise to pair-bonds in non-human primates and in humans.

"There's some consensus among anthropologists that pairs-bonds must have played an important role in the origin of human societies," Fernandez-Duque said. "Call it love, call it friendship, call it marriage, there is something in our biology that leads to this enduring, emotional bond between two individuals that is widespread among human societies."

This Wall Street Journal Article About Stay-At-Home Dads And ...

The Wall Street Journal published an article this week about ?a new model of at-home fatherhood,? spawned by the rise of stay-at-home dads and inclusiveness of fathers in the day-to-day parenting. ?While the WSJ?wasn?t quite arguing that parenting is all duded up and bro-ed out, it did argue that stay-at-home dads have put a ?distinctly masculine stamp on child rearing and home life.?

Yes, there is research to back up the claim that the relatively small amount of stay-at-home dads ? who comprise only 3.6 percent of all SAH parents ? do rear children differently than the larger sample of stay-at-home mothers (an elite 18 percent of male-female couples). SAHDs allow their children to take more safety risks and also plan more spontaneous trips.

But I just don?t see how those traits are being ascribed as ?masculine.? Surely there are mothers who don?t hover over their child?s every move? Surely there are mothers who are spontaneous? The WSJ interviewed fathers who do things like take their kids to the park and on errands to Home Depot (where a toddler ?studied different kinds of hammers?) ? because moms don?t take their kids to the park and run errands, I guess?

The WSJ focuses on a heteronormative family construction (mom + dad) and then assumed each partner is bringing gendered qualities to their role of parent. I don?t deny that the constructions of masculine and feminine exist as concepts in the grand scheme of things. (Childbirth, of course, is arguably the most feminine of possible pursuits.)But the article presumes that when a woman is the stay-at-home parent or ?primary? parent, she is the dominant force for parenting and home life by default and ergo her stamp is ?distinctly feminine,? whatever that means.

The reality is that most family structures are a mix of both mom and dad, both ?masculine? and ?feminine? parenting influences, all the time.?I grew up in a traditional family where my dad worked outside of the home and my mom raised five kids. Even though my mother spent several more hours of the day with me and my siblings before and after school than my dad did, I wouldn?t describe her as the more ?dominant? parent or a particularly ?feminine? parent. She made more of the daily off-the-cuff decisions, sure, but bigger questions ? can I go to camp? can I sleep over someone?s house if their parents won?t be home? etc. ? were stuff they talked about together. Like most sets of parents, each parent had different buttons that could be pushed and different things they would be strict about. (My mom, for instance, would FLIP OUT LIKE UNHOLY HELL if we said the word ?fart? or made fart noises. My dad, however, would start giggling.) I would call them a man and a woman who parented, but not people who parented in a gendered way. Parents are parents, whether they?re a mom and a dad, or two moms, or two dads, or one dad, or one mom, or some other combination.

It?s awesome that dads can stay at home now and raise kids and do chores without having their masculinity be questioned. I?m just afraid that ascribing gendered traits to parenting is not useful for anyone ? especially the children.

Oops! Twitter's new video-sharing service lacks privacy settings

2 hrs.

Twitter's new video-sharing service Vine?feels a lot like Instagram for videos. It's neat, easy to use, and can produce fun clips. Just?one problem: There are no privacy settings whatsoever.

Right now, you can create and share Vine?videos using an iOS app?only. All you have to do is point your iPhone (or iPod Touch) at something and press your finger to the screen to record a clip up to six seconds in length (both sound and motion are captured, of course). Once satisfied with your final product, you can share it to Vine, Twitter and Facebook.?

Unfortunately as soon as you post?the clip to Vine, you've lost any control over who views it or interacts with it. There's no way to create a private Vine account nor can you choose who may follow you or view your profile on the video-sharing service. And while you can delete comments from your Vine posts, there's no way to block or report abusive users. (Though you can report videos as inappropriate.)

NBC News asked Twitter about the lack of privacy settings on Vine, and we were?pointed to the service's Help site, which confirms what we've experienced. ?"Profiles and videos on Vine are public, and anyone on the service can view them," a note declares before clarifying that?you can certainly?use Vine to create a video and save it to your Camera Roll rather than sharing it.?But this?isn't enough to?satisfy our need for actual privacy controls. We're instead left with the promise that the team?behind the service will "add more ways for you to control the visibility of your content in a future version of Vine."?

Bullet to the Head Set Visit Report

bullet-to-the-head-slice

Jason Momoa is dressed in a sharp black suit with his hair slicked back.? With his size and stature, he?s clearly someone you don?t want to fuck with.? He?s walking towards the back of a local Crescent City (New Orleans) bar, and after walking down a short, narrow hallway, he gets to an open door.? As he turns to enter the room, he quickly glances around to take in the surroundings.? Sitting at a table in a small room are four men playing cards, with another reading the local paper.? The man reading the paper appears to be the one in charge.? As Momoa moves closer to the table, he says to the man reading the paper, ?Open the safe.?? The man responds, ?What did you say?? Momoa responds, ?Open the safe.?? Surprised by Momoa?s statement, the man says, ?Who the fuck do you think you are?? Then, almost a millisecond later, Momoa responds, but not with words but with bullets.? Boom. Boom. Boom.? And just like that, Momoa has shot three of the people in the head.? ?I said open the safe.?? A moment later, Boom! He?s shot the final card player at the table in the head.? ?Please, open the safe.?? Clearly taken aback by the brutal killings, the final man left alive stands up, and leads Momoa towards the safe, opens it and takes a step back.? As Momoa reaches in to grab a thin tan file, we hear ?Boom!? He?s shot the boss in the head.

Let me back up a second.? It?s August 23, 2011, and I just left New Orleans. I?m sitting on a plane flying back to Los Angeles because I spent yesterday on the set of director Walter Hill?s Bullet to the Head.? For more on the visit, hit the jump.

What it?s About

The graphic novel adaptation stars?Sylvester Stallone?as Jimmy Bobo, a New Orleans hitman who teams up with a New York City cop (Sung Kang) to bring down the killers of their respective partners.? The film also stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje,?Jason Momoa, Sarah Shahi and Christian Slater.

Before going any further, if you haven?t seen the trailer, I?d watch that first.

Walter Hill

walter hill bullet to the headWhile I usually don?t take the time to give a refresher on the director, for Walter Hill, I?ll make an exception.? Before going any further, if you?ve never seen 48 Hours, The Warriors, Brewster?s Millions (I dig this film), or The Driver, I strongly suggest adding the films to your Netflix queue, or picking them up on Amazon.? Hill?s early films are fantastic.

8 Things to Know About Bullet to the Head

Everyone shoots people in the head.? Stallone, Sung Kang, Jason Momoa?.everyone.

The body count is going to be very high.? At least 70 people get killed.? No one would say the count hits 100, but it wouldn?t surprise me.

Momoa and Stallone have 3 big fight scenes.? The final one involves the two of them fighting with axes.? They filmed the scene over three days and they had three days of rehearsals before filming.

New Orleans wouldn?t let them use the name ?New Orleans? because the movie depicts a corrupt cop. So they had to use the name Crescent City.? Clearly, in the history of this fine city, there have never been any corrupt cops?

Walter Hill is planning on using Cajun music and old time band music for part of his soundtrack.

bullet to the head posterBullet to the Head isn?t a big spectacle movie; it?s more character driven.

The movie is trying to mix in humor along with the action and character moments.? Sung Kang referenced the way Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy talked in 48 Hours.

The movie has a 43-day shooting schedule and only eight were on soundstages.? The rest were on location.

The movie was shot on film, but the 2nd unit used the ARRI Alexa for a few of their shots.

The Filming

As I?ve said many times, every set visit is different.? I?ve been on movie sets where all we got to see is a small line of dialogue being delivered in many different ways, and I?ve been on set during a machine gun fight.? You never know what you?ll see and do until you walk onto set.? For Bullet to the Head, we got to watch a few things get filmed.

The first scene was what I wrote about during the opening of this report: we watched Momoa brutally kill five guys.? What I left out, though, was the way Momoa delivered the dialogue.? While he could have been serious, or played it like a joke, as he delivered his lines, he was almost smiling, like his character was absolutely loving his job and getting to kill people was the best part.? He?s definitely playing his character like a sadistic killer.

jason-momoa-bullet-to-the-headAfter watching the scene get filmed a number of different ways (you have to have coverage for editing), we eventually made our way to a local indoor pool where we watched Sylvester Stallone and Sung Kang film their escape.? In the film, Stallone?s character has a beat up cabin on the water outside of the city.? At some point, their pursuers locate the cabin, and Stallone and Kang use an escape hatch in the middle of the floor to dive into the water and swim away.? After they get to the other side, Stallone uses a remote detonator to blow up the cabin while a bunch of people are inside.

As you might imagine, a movie isn?t going to ask the lead actors to jump into the Mississippi River.? After all, it?s dirty, and you can?t control the elements.? So what the production did was recreate the bottom of the cabin above an indoor swimming pool and they had Stallone and? Kang jump into the pool to pretend that was the river.? In addition, we watched as an underwater cameraman got a number of takes of Stallone and Kang swimming.? So when you see it in the movie, it?s not stuntmen.

What I found really interesting was what happened after each take.? Since Walter Hill was on first unit directing Jason Momoa, the second unit director would show Stallone the playback after every take and they?d discuss what worked and what needed a fix.? It?s clear that while Stallone isn?t directing Bullet to the Head, he?s very involved in the production and cares about every take.

sylvester-stallone-bullet-to-the-headAfter watching a number of takes, we left the extremely hot and humid pool for a short break.

Since the next part of the production was going to take place on the streets of New Orleans near Bourbon Street, we had a few hours to ourselves.? After some food and plenty of water, we eventually made our way to the production and watched ? along with tons of regular folks who were lining the streets ? Stallone do a small dialogue scene inside a brand new, black Ferrari.? While I don?t know what he was saying in the scene, we watched as two cameras recorded the action.? One was directly in front of the car and peering in from the front window, and the other was on the sidewalk with dolly tracks running parallel to the car.? As Stallone talked on a phone, we watched as the dolly pushed along the tracks.

From there, we watched as the production got a few establishing shots of the local hotel, and right after that, we walked back to our hotel.

Final Thoughts

As a big fan of Walter Hill, I?m sincerely rooting for Bullet to the Head to be a kick-ass film.? I?d like nothing more than Hill to make another awesome film, and for him to remind all the younger film fans that he?s a great and talented director.? Like most set visits, I left thinking what I just watched could be very cool.? Hopefully, it will be.

Yemen: US drone strike kills 7 suspected militants

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemeni officials say a U.S. drone strike on a car outside the capital of Sanaa has killed at least seven suspected al-Qaida militants.

The officials say the drone attack took place Wednesday near the town of Khwlan, some 35 kilometers (20 miles) southeast of the capital. Military officials and tribal witnesses say the car was destroyed, and burnt bodies could be seen inside the wreckage.

The officials and witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Also, the Interior Ministry raised the death toll from a drone strike on Tuesday from three suspected militants to five.

Al-Qaida in Yemen is considered among the world's most active branches of the network.

The United States rarely comments on its military role in Yemen.

Tell all the Truth | Katherine Cowley

I first encountered what is now one of my favorite Emily Dickinson poems in a class I took on memoir writing. Here?s the short, two-stanza poem:

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant ? Success in Circuit lies Too bright for our infirm Delight The Truth?s superb surprise ? As Lightning to the Children eased With explanation kind The Truth must dazzle gradually Or every man be blind ?

?

I?ve found that ?tell it slant? has been great advice for me as a writer.

In argumentative writing, it means I don?t always come out with my argument from the gate. If you start with your argument (i.e. we need strong gun control) you can sometimes lose all hope of persuading an audience who doesn?t always agree with you. From the start they already know they disagree with you, whereas if you use a?point last structure, you can start on common ground and at least get your audience to listen to you.

In creative writing, to me ?tell it slant? means to focus on craft and character and dialogue, to not be overly didactic with whatever ?truth? I think I know, to let both characters and my readers figure things out on their own, and allow them to learn their own lessons, which may or may not be what I had originally intended.

The book?Tell it Slant?takes its title from Emily Dickinson?s poem, explaining, ?she meant, we think, that truth takes on many guises; that the truth of art can be very different than the truth of day-to-day life? (2). ?The authors go on to quote Salman Rushdie:

Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination and of the heart. (3)

I hope that I can learn to tell the truth in my writing, to speak to the imagination and to the heart.

Rand hits 9.0 rand after stop-losses triggered

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The rand fell through the psychologically key 9.0 level against the dollar on Wednesday as increasing negative sentiment towards South Africa's economy triggered stop losses on the currency.

Violent labour protests in Africa's largest economy have hit invest sentiment since late last year, triggering three credit rating downgrades.

The rand lost over 1.6 percent to 9.0001/dollar, its weakest in over nine weeks. Its next support level is the 3-1/2 year low of 9.01 hit in November.

"We've seen some stop-loss activity, so people are stopping on long rand positions on a technical breakthrough of the 8.88-8.89 level," said Duncan Howes, a trader at Absa Capital.

Light liquidity conditions and global demand for dollars added to the rand's woes, although the currency is unlikely to weaken further on Wednesday as other emerging market units had either stabilised or strengthened, Howes said.

The rand also has strong support at the 9 rand level, and it had pulled back to 8.96 by 1229 GMT on Wednesday but remained the biggest loser against the dollar in a basket of 20 emerging market currencies tracked by Reuters.

Analysts say the rand is in over-sold territory against the euro but any dips will be restricted by negative sentiment towards South Africa.

Euro/rand hit 12 rand, before retreating to 11.95 rand.

Government bond yields were up, with the long end of the yield curve rising the most. The benchmark 2026 yield gained 7 basis points to a two-week high of 7.32 percent, while the 2048 yield climbed 9 basis points to 8.39 percent.

"It's a very bearish view on South Africa all round. Today has seen a somewhat snowball effect of the recent mood, which has been to sell the rand against EM and the majors, and bonds are taking the brunt of this too," said Anisha Arora of 4Cast.

Headline inflation data released earlier in the session showed CPI accelerated to 5.7 percent in December, its fastest pace since May, causing a further sell-off in the bond market as investors interpreted the high print to mean inflation may push out of the Reserve Bank's (SARB) 3-6 percent target range.

After three days of deliberations on monetary policy, the Bank will announce a decision on the repo rate on Thursday.

Economists polled by Reuters expect the SARB will hold rates steady at 40-year lows to support struggling economic growth.

"Bonds were already weaker after CPI basically confirmed that the SARB will not move rates in the short- to medium-term horizon and the poor forex outlook has spread to local assets, igniting this sell off further," Arora said.

Insurance commissioners: Health care startup may bring 'chaos ...

By Bloomberg News

Published: Tuesday, January 22, 2013, 6:14?p.m.
Updated 5 hours ago

President Obama may need to delay his health care overhaul or risk ?chaos? when subsidized insurance plans go on sale in October, the head of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners said.

It?s unclear how well the new system will perform on Oct. 1, when millions of Americans are supposed to begin shopping at online markets created by the law, said Jim Donelon, the NAIC?s president. While the administration has shown no sign of seeking a delay, it may be in the president?s best interest, he said.

?It?s his calling-card, signature issue and to rush it into implementation before it?s ready would not be in his overall interest,? said Donelon, Louisiana?s insurance commissioner. State officials around the country ?don?t want it to create chaos.?

The Obama administration and 18 states are preparing to establish the insurance markets, a centerpiece of the 2010 law designed to extend coverage to millions of uninsured people. The association, which represents state regulators, on Tuesday named former Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska as its chief executive officer.

?We needed the gravitas, the phone calls returned, to go to Capitol Hill, to tell our story, defend our turf, and beyond, protect and promote our system around the world,? Donelon said.

State regulators are contending with the Federal Insurance Office created by the Dodd-Frank law, expanded U.S. involvement in health insurance and European efforts to regulate capital known as Solvency II. State regulation has served consumers and insurers well and deserves to be defended, Nelson, 71, said.

?To impose their standard solvency regulation I think is a mistake, and I hope to work to try to convince them of that,? he said. ?It isn?t broken, so we?re not going to let them fix it.?

A former insurance industry executive, Nelson provided the 60th vote to help push Obama?s Affordable Care Act through the Senate.

Eighteen states are building exchanges that will let uninsured residents buy medical plans starting in October. People who don?t get insurance through their employers would use the exchanges to select coverage from private insurers, often with taxpayer-subsidized premiums.

Some states are revamping Medicaid programs for the poor by broadening eligibility rules. Congressional budget projections show that more than half of the 30 million uninsured targeted by the law will eventually buy subsidized plans through the state exchanges, and at least 11 million others will become eligible for state-run Medicaid coverage.

The government is giving states that run their own exchanges a share of about $2 billion to help get them started. The remainder of the states will let the United States run the exchanges or choose to provide services such as consumer assistance in a partnership with the federal government.

President Barack Obama opened the first inaugural ball last night extending ?extraordinary gratitude? to the men and women in uniform and promised to ensure they have everything they need as they defend Americans? freedoms every day.

Speaking to hundreds of service members, including wounded warriors and Medal of Honor recipients, Gold Star families and veterans gathered at the Commander in Chief?s Ball, and via a televised webcast with troops deployed to Afghanistan, the president said it?s impossible to say ?thank you? enough to those who serve.

?Thank you for volunteering. Thank you for stepping up. Thank you for keeping us strong. Thank you for always making us proud,? he told the gathering.

?I have no greater honor than being your commander in chief,? he said, drawing enthusiastic applause.

Obama ticked off some of the accomplishments made possible during the past four years, and vowed to ensure the military has what it needs for continued success.

?It?s because of you that with honor we were able to end the war in Iraq. Because of you that we delivered justice to Osama bin Laden. Because of you that it?s even possible to give Afghans a chance to determine their own destiny,? he said. ?We are going forward, and we?ll keep our military the finest fighting force the world has ever known.?

The president offered special recognition to members of the 3rd Infantry Division and Regional Command South, who are deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan. He spoke via teleconference with Army Sgt. 1st Class Orlando Jackson and Army Sgt. 1st Class David Wood from the 3rd Infantry Division?s Falcon Brigade, Task Force Light Horse; and Air Force Master Sgt. Robert Skowronski and Air Force Master Sgt. James Godlewski of the 807th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron.

?We know it?s tough being away from your families. We know the incredible sacrifices and challenges that you make every day,? Obama said. ?But I can tell you that you?ve got a room full of patriots here.

?And although I?ve got to admit that they?re a little spiffied up right now,? he continued, drawing laughter and applause, ?their heart and soul, their dedication, their sense of duty is at one with every single one of the folks who are in Kandahar right now.?

Reflecting on his swearing-in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol earlier in the day, Obama said he biggest cheer he received was as he spoke about ?the extraordinary men and women in uniform that preserve our freedom and keep our country strong.?

He offered assurance that the nation will continue to stand by them and give them the tools and support they and their families require.

?We?re going to make sure that you?ve got the equipment, the strategy [and] the mission that allows you to succeed and keep our country safe,? he said. ?Know that we are going to be looking after and thinking about your families every single day ? and that when you get back home, you?re going to be greeted by a grateful nation.?

Four service members were selected for honorary dances during the ball. Air Force Staff Sgt. Bria D. Nelson of the 579th Medical Operations Squadron, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., danced with the president.

Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Timothy D. Easterling, assigned to Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., as a distance learning instructor, danced with First Lady Michelle Obama.

Army Staff Sgt. Keesha N. Dentino, assigned to the 947th Military Police Detachment, Fort Myer, Va., as a patrol explosives detection dog handler, danced with Vice President Joe Biden.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Patrick R. Figueroa, assigned to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., as a manpower transfer clerk, danced with Dr. Jill Biden.

The star-studded lineup of performers at the ball included Dan Moose, Alicia Keys, Brad Paisley, Chris Cornell, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson and Marc Anthony.

US official: 2 more Americans die in Algeria

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two additional Americans were killed in last week's hostage standoff at a natural gas complex in Algeria, bringing the final U.S. death toll to three, an Obama administration official said Monday.

Seven Americans made it out safely.

The deceased Americans were identified as Victor Lynn Lovelady and Gordon Lee Rowan, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter. The official had no details on how the Americans died, and their hometowns were not released. The FBI has recovered the bodies of and notified the families.

Militants who attacked the Ain Amenas gas field in the Sahara had offered to release the pair in exchange for the freedom of two prominent terror suspects jailed in the United States: Omar Abdel Rahman, a blind sheik convicted of plotting to blow up New York City landmarks and considered the spiritual leader of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani scientist convicted of shooting at two U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

The Obama administration rejected the offer outright.

Last week's desert siege began Wednesday when Mali-based, al-Qaida-linked militants attempted to hijack two buses at the plant, were repelled, and then seized the gas refinery. They said the attack was retaliation for France's recent military intervention against Islamist rebels in neighboring Mali, but security experts argue it must have taken weeks of planning to hit the remote site.

One American death was confirmed Friday, that of Texas resident Frederick Buttaccio. And five Americans had been taken out of the country before Saturday's final assault by Algerian forces against the militants.

The U.S. official said two further Americans survived the four-day crisis at an insecure oil rig at the facility. They were flown out to London on Saturday.

The overall death toll from the standoff has surpassed 80.

Algeria said after Saturday's assault by government forces that at least 32 extremists and 23 hostages of all nationalities were killed. On Sunday, the Algerian bomb squads found 25 more bodies, according to a security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. And a wounded Romanian who had been evacuated later died.
