Cricket to offer Muve exclusively on Android plans

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mobile phone carrier Cricket is making its unlimited music service, Muve Music, an exclusive feature of its higher-end phones.

The change is a bid to encourage users of lower-end, basic cellphones to trade up to smartphones, which require more expensive plans. The company will stop offering the service on basic phones to new customers.

Muve Music allows users to download songs from a catalog of millions. The songs cannot be transferred off the phone, and access disappears if a subscriber cancels service. About 600,000 Cricket subscribers now pay an extra $10 a month to get the service.

Starting next month, Muve will be included in all plans for smartphones that use Google's Android operating system. The plans go from $50 a month including 1 gigabyte of data to $70 a month for 5 GB.

Previously, Android phones with unlimited data plans cost $55 a month, or $65 with Muve included. The least expensive non-smartphone plan with Muve cost $55 a month.

As Cricket adds new customers and others leave, the plan could help boost Muve Music's subscriber count.

Cricket, which offers lower-cost, contract-free plans to rival those of the bigger carriers, currently has 5.9 million customers, and 60 percent of them use Android phones.

If those numbers hold steady, subscribers to Muve Music could exceed 3 million in the two years that it generally takes for Cricket's customer base to change over completely. That would make it the largest music subscription plan in the nation.

Both Rhapsody and Spotify, the market leaders in the U.S., currently have about 1 million paying U.S. subscribers each.

The use of Muve does not count against one's data cap. The typical customer downloads about 300 songs and listens to more than 30 hours of music every month, the company said.

Cricket, the brand of Leap Wireless International Inc., saw its subscriber count drop to 5.9 million in the quarter through June, down from 6.2 million in the previous quarter. Leap executives blamed the dip on weak results from national retailers that carry the brand. Leap has its headquarters in San Diego.

The Alberta Oil Sands Means Jobs!!

The Alberta Oil Sands and particularly jobs in the Alberta oil sands, is a topic of interest both abroad and in Canada. Statistics show that Canada has 179 billion barrels of oil reserves and 170 billion barrels are located in Alberta. However, the Alberta Oil Sands is not for everyone!

The oil sands workforce is made up of thousands of international workers. Estimates say that 44 percent of oil sands employees are from outside the province. Most of the workers needed during the construction phase of a project include skilled tradespeople and laborers. As the oil sands become more accessible, oil sands jobs will increase. Oil Sands employers in Alberta, continually post job openings ranging from specialized engineering and technical jobs, to laborer positions.

Job seekers need to do their research, apply with the right companies, and ask the right questions when speaking to employers. At Goldman Associates we search for employment for you, and we prepare and guide you to do your own job search.

Some of the jobs currently available in the Oil Sands are: crane operators and technicians, electricians, electrical rewind mechanics, heavy equipment operators, heavy equipment mechanics, HVAC technicians, ironworkers, insulators, machinists, pipefitters, plumbers, sandblasters, sheet metal workers. Most companies expect tradespeople in regulated occupations to be eligible to write the Interprovincial Red Seal licensing exam. Goldman Associates will guide you through the assessment process and help you to gain your interprovincial license.

With dozens of oil sands companies operating in the region, there are hundreds of oil sands service and maintenance companies, and construction companies, thus creating many major employment opportunities. In the Fort McMurray area there are three main types of employment: oil and gas industry, construction industry and support industries which include retail, health care, transportation and education.

Fort McMurray is expensive and housing is difficult to find. Therefore, many foreign workers often work in jobs based out of a work camp. Camp life means travel back and forth with little time left to spend with your family. These camps have been around for many years and serve as a home away from home for many tradespeople including; carpenters, millwrights, pipefitters and scaffolders.

Oil companies have invested enormous amounts of money and resources into oil sands production and the profit looks to be tremendous. Years ago, the idea of extracting oil from oil sands left investors and analysts skeptical. Of course, that has changed, and the oil is now being produced in large quantities.

One big obstacle the oil sands companies face is the shortage of skilled workers!

?

With choreographed conventions, is something lost?

(AP) ? As Chris Christie's moment at the microphone neared, delegates to the Republican National Convention were atwitter at the chance to hear the New Jersey governor speak. After all, who knew what might happen? "He doesn't seem to have a filter," said David Shimkin, a delegate from New York.

But the famously freewheeling Christie does in fact have filters: He's using a teleprompter, and he's reading from a speech that has been vetted and approved.

Americans hunger for authenticity ? or, at least, say that they do. The explosion of reality TV is testament to that desire for the unscripted moment (even if that unscripted moment is, well, scripted). So the slick choreography of the modern political convention, while understandable, also seems odd. And, some say, it's actually counterproductive to what the parties say they want to accomplish: generate passion that translates into votes.

"This regard for order, this insistence on order, it's just weird," says Richard Bensel, a professor of American politics at Cornell University.

It's that need to control the message and the messengers that led Texas Congressman Ron Paul to hold his own alternative rally Sunday in Tampa, Fla., drawing a crowd of thousands. "It's exactly what the Republican Party should have wanted ? real spirit, real emotion," Bensel says. "That enthusiasm shouldn't be offstage. It shouldn't be in an independent rally."

But it's the way things work these days. And Robert Lehrman, who was Vice President Al Gore's chief speech writer for three years, says that if he were GOP nominee Mitt Romney, he would insist on an orderly convention.

"You're trying to show a unified, strong party that represents your views," says Lehrman, author of the 2009 book "The Political Speechwriter's Companion." ''And to have those kinds of debates doesn't help the campaign."

"Used to be 30 years ago, you had platform fights, and they would come from the floor and be debated," he says. "Now, they had some platform stuff on CSPAN, where 30,000 people watch it. But 30 million people have no idea about those things."

In the 19th century, the candidates mostly avoided the conventions altogether. In 1860, Lincoln stayed home in Springfield and his supporters did the work. To do otherwise, Lehrman says, "was considered immodest."

Harry Truman was such a terrible speaker that his aides, at the 1948 Democratic convention, decided to give him a list of talking points instead of a speech. To make things worse, just as he reached the stage, a woman rushed up with a cage full of "doves of peace" ? which promptly got loose and, as one aide would later write, "did what pigeons do." The speech went on to be one of Truman's more memorable, but it's hard to forget the pigeons.

There was a time when a rousing convention speech could make history. William Jennings Bryan was a little-known former Nebraska congressman when he arrived in Chicago for the 1896 Democratic National Convention to make a speech in favor of the free-silver movement. Most newspapers covering the event listed him sixth or lower ? if at all.

"He was technically a candidate, but in the way, say, Ron Paul is. Even less than that, actually," says Bensel, author of "Passion and Preferences: William Jennings Bryan and the 1896 Democratic Convention." But after Bryan delivered his now legendary "Cross of Gold" speech, he walked away with the party's nomination ? and a place in the history books.

Sociologist and essayist John Shelton Reed understands that the Republicans don't want another "Pat Buchanan moment" ? the former presidential candidate's infamous "culture war" speech at the 1992 GOP convention in Houston.

"There is a religious war going on in this country," Buchanan thundered from the podium. "It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we shall be as the Cold War itself. For this war is for the soul of America. And in that struggle for the soul of America, Clinton and Clinton are on the other side, and George Bush is on our side."

"Everybody seemed to agree that was not helpful," Reed says. "They didn't check it in advance, I'm pretty sure."

Christie is famous for speaking bluntly and loudly. But he understands that Tampa is not the place for winging it. In an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Christie acknowledged as much. "I don't use text almost ever," he said. "So most of the time I think about what it is I want to talk about, and then I get up there and I talk about it."

Given the venue and the time restrictions, Christie said, "they want you to work off a text, and that's fine." But he noted that Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour reminded him that he needed to "be Chris.'"

"If that means I stray a little off the prompter every once in a while," he said, "that's the way it goes."

It's that delicate balance ? preparation without overpackaging ? that is so difficult to strike. Rick Andrews, who teaches improv at New York's Magnet Theater, works with businesspeople trying to communicate better. The trick for politicians, he says, is to try to "appear casual, off the cuff ? when you're not."

"We would be shocked if they weren't prepared," Andrews says. "But we also don't want them to appear to be overly prepared."

Republicans, including Romney, have openly mocked President Barack Obama's use of the teleprompter. But Ann Romney, the former Massachusetts governor's wife, seemed relieved to know she would not be up on that stage alone. She told reporters Tuesday that she had "never gone off of a written text."

"I had a lot of input in this, I must say, and a lot of, um, tweaking where I felt like was getting what I really wanted to say and from my heart," she said.

Mitt Romney has a reputation for being somewhat stiff. But Lehrman is looking forward to his performance Thursday evening ? particularly given that the GOP nominee has been working with an oratory coach. "I see him being more impassioned and more natural," Lehrman says. "He's been able to fake naturalness better."

And in the process, perhaps, something valuable is lost. That's how Bensel sees it. By sculpting their conventions so carefully, he says, both political parties are missing out on the chance to make history.

"The problem is, when you script the speech, the crowd isn't involved and there's no feedback, there's no spontaneity," Bensel says. "The whole connection between the party rank and file as audience and whoever's speaking is broken. You are just an audience. You aren't a participant in the creation of a political moment."

THE IRISH OBSERVER: Budget 2013, Minister for Finance, Michael ...

Budget 2013, Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD, Breaking news, Property tax 2%

The Minister of Finance has refused to reveal his preference on how the new tax on property tax should be calculated. However, insiders have said that the property tax will start at 2% of the current market value of the property and this will eventually increase over the next four budgets to 5%, this has alreay been sanctioned by the EU-IMF.

Speaking in Limerick today, Michael Noonan said the new tax will be introduced next year, as required under the terms of Ireland?s agreement with the EU-IMF troika.

He would not comment on speculation the tax would be value-based but said the Revenue Commissioners would have responsibility for collecting it due to difficulties experienced in collecting the household charge.
According to Department of the Environment figures, about 600,000 homeowners out of the estimated 1.6 million in the State have yet to register to pay the ?100 household charge.

?The detail of the property tax has to be worked out. All that has been decided is that there will be a property tax on family homes and that property tax will be collected by the Revenue Commissioners,? said Mr Noonan. ?Of course I have a preference and I?ll be stating it at Cabinet.?

Mr Noonan described the property tax as a budgetary matter and warned Budget 2013 will include tax increases and cuts to services.

?We are still as a country spending a lot more than we collect in taxation and there?s only two possible ways of closing the gap. One is to cut what we spend and the other is to increase taxes.

?It?s very hard on people there?s no doubt that people are paying the price of what happened at the peak of the Celtic Tiger," he said. "I?m not making light of it. The issues are very serious and the burden being put on our fellow citizens is a very serious burden and they are having tough times.

?All I can say is if we stick with it we are going to work our way through it. If we give up half way across the river we will have all the pain and we won?t have the solution either.?

Mr Noonan was speaking at the opening of the new Eason store at the Parkway Shopping Centre in Limerick.

When asked about calls for the immediate release of a letter from the former ECB president Jean Claude Trichet to former finance minister Brian Lenihan that reportedly left Ireland no choice but to accept a bailout, Mr Noonan said Fianna F?il had plenty of opportunities to publish the letter in the last two years.

?When Fianna F?il were in government they had plenty of opportunity to publish the letter and plenty of opportunity to show it to any of their colleagues in the parliamentary party who were requesting it. The letter dates from sometime in the autumn of 2010, so that?s quite a while ago,? he said.

He said the Government had decided that all documents will be provided when an investigation into the banking collapse is carried out.

?My view on it is it wouldn?t be appropriate of me to overrule the independence of those that decide on Freedom of Information, but the Government has decided that there will be an inquiry into banking and the events around the bailout.

"All documents will be provided to whatever group or unit or individuals that are conducting that inquiry and again in the usual way it will be a matter for that inquiry to decide what documents they would subsequently publish with that report.?

He said Minister for Public Reform Brendan Howlin intends beginning the inquiry in the autumn but that a decision has yet to be made as to which committee within the Oireachtas will oversee the investigation ?or indeed, whether or not it will be an entirely new committee?.

When asked if the Mr Trichet?s letter was threatening Mr Noonan replied: "You can?t take these things out of context. It?s a very firm letter."

He refused to enter the debate on whether or not the Catholic Church should be allowed to lobby the Government on abortion legislation.

He said he did not wish to comment on remarks by the Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte, who said it would be a retrograde step if the Catholic Church went back to dictating to elected representatives how to address the issue of abortion.

?I?m not being drawn into that particular piece of controversy at the moment,? he said.

Microsoft permanently lowering Kinect price in the US to $110, slightly reducing it in other parts of the world

Well, it certainly looks like the news of that Xbox Essentials Pack isn't the only thing coming out of Redmond today. As the communicative Major Nelson unequivocally notes, Microsoft's officially dropping down the price of its "You Are the Controller" Xbox 360 add-on in the US to a mere 110 bucks. Additionally, he's also said there's a "permanently reduced" pricing scheme coming to other countries in North America, Latin America and the Asia Pacific regions (save for Japan) where the company's Kinect is available for purchase; meanwhile, folks in the Middle East, Europe and Africa seem to be out of luck for now, since there are no price-slashing plans for the time being.

The purpose and problems of pain

understanding-pain.jpgSamantha Murphy, contributor

PAIN remains one of the most slippery concepts in physiology. We all experience it, but it is nearly impossible to define in any complete way. That's because measuring it objectively or testing for it is nearly impossible. If you'll forgive the comparison, one could argue that we are closer to "operationalising" love than pain.

In Understanding Pain, Fernando Cervero, professor of anaesthesia at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, gives a remarkably lively tour of what we do know. Although the book is heavily rooted in neuroscience research, Cervero provides a rich and historical backdrop, and layers his explanations with colourful metaphors and relatable examples.

He also tours through all that we still don't understand, including exactly what pain is and why it occurs. There are several different types of pain that appear to have different origins, functions and mechanisms. Sometimes we experience "good pain", which has a protective element, "bad pain" as a consequence of injury or disease, or "chronic pain", which exists for no apparent reason.

How we measure pain is improving, but the best and most reliable method continues to be having sufferers score their own discomfort. Testing pain is a messy process and not for the weak of heart, and treating it is even trickier - it is difficult to target a drug if you cannot point to the offending issue in all cases.

Ongoing efforts to resolve these ambiguities are slowly helping to clarify the physiology of pain.

A recent shift in societal perception is good news for those who are suffering, Cervero says. That change in attitude, from a belief that individuals should suffer in silence to the idea that pain can and should be reported and treated, means it is now considered a "multidimensional disease" rather than solely a symptom. Bringing pain out of the shadows brings the hope of new treatments, a reduction in shame and critically important scientific knowledge.

"We are moving in the right direction," Cervero says. Pain may be part of the human condition, but it is not one that must be accepted.

Marie Curie, the family woman

marie-curie-and-her-daughters.jpgAndrew Robinson, contributor

BIOGRAPHIES of Marie Curie tend to neglect her last two decades or so and concentrate on her scientific career up to the isolation of radium, for which she won her second Nobel prize in 1911. But, though scientifically less fruitful, her later years were in many ways the most eventful of her life.

In Marie Curie and Her Daughters, Shelley Emling focuses on this later era in the great scientist's life. It included a controversial love affair with physicist Paul Langevin, a friendship with Albert Einstein, the establishment of the Radium Institute in Paris, her pioneering use of radiography on the French wounded in the first world war, her tours of the US to raise money to obtain radium for her institutes in Paris and Warsaw, and her relationships with her daughters, scientist Ir?ne Joliot-Curie and writer Eve Curie.

Science is not the strength of this book. Pierre Curie's vital contribution and personality are rendered almost invisible, and Emling says little about the discovery of radioactivity by Henri Becquerel and the Curies in the 1890s - and botches the references she does make to the Curies' legendary preparation of radium between 1899 and 1902.

Still, the book works well at a more personal level and inspires fresh admiration for Marie Curie's dedication to science, ethics and individuals, particularly her two daughters. After working closely with her mother, Ir?ne went on to win a Nobel prize for her work on artificial radioactivity in 1935, in collaboration with her own husband. Eve wrote a biography of her mother, Madame Curie, which was a worldwide bestseller in the 1930s and was adapted to make a Hollywood feature film in 1943.

Perhaps the most surprising part of the book, though, is to see how Curie's welcome in the US in 1921 - by universities, companies and public figures including US president Warren Harding - enabled her to shake off her dread of the spotlight. Wisely or not, Marie and Pierre always refused on principle to patent any of their techniques, and so their radium institutes were long deprived of resources. By her 1929 US tour, she used her fame to help raise funds for her institutes' research.

Yet as this latest biography makes clear, it never went to her head. As Einstein once remarked, "Marie Curie is, of all celebrated beings, the only one whom fame has not corrupted."

Rare iPhone 4 prototype appears on eBay with strange Death Star logo on the back

Rare iPhone 4 prototype appears on eBay complete with strange logo on the back panelA rare Apple iPhone N90 prototype, the code name for the iPhone 4 series, has appeared for sales on eBay with a very strange logo on the back panel. Rather than the usual Apple logo which we all know and love, this prototype has a logo which appears to resemble the Death Star from the Star Wars movies.

The eBay description states that the iPhone 4 prototype has a storage capacity of 32GB. The back panel is not screwed to the shell like the final retail version of the iPhone 4; this prototype uses a back clamp system which has been broken so the back panel falls off very easily.

We have seen a few prototype iPhone models before, but not many that are still operational. This one has had a battery replaced but does still turn on and is fully operational. When we say operational, don?t expect to be able to make and receive calls or upgrade it to iOS 5. It only runs Apple?s test software suite, SwitchBoard.

If you want to get your hands on a piece of unique Apple history, you can make a bid of $4500 or more. If you really want to make sure you aren?t outbid you can contact the seller with an offer of $10,000 and it?s yours. That's if Apple doesn't have it removed first.

Astronomers Watch Star Devouring Planet

A sufficiently advanced and long-lived civilization comes to realize that its sun is a liability, not an asset.

Of course reaching the end of its life and going nova or red giant is bad. But even well before that, stars are known to throw nasty flares and Carrington-type events [slashdot.org]. And go through dim/bright cycles (almost all stars are variable to some degree, including ours).

Colonizing the moon or Mars doesn't guarantee survival of the human race. The only real way to do that is to move the planet far away from the star -- a.k.a. Fleet of Worlds. This is part of the wisdom contained in the Known Space books.

Daily Share ? LOVE Challenge!

Hello Mastin,

Let me first say that TDL has been wonderful for me and the changes I am making in my life. I was introduced to your website by a friend, not because I was in a ?bad place? but rather because she enjoyed my daily post aka ?epiphanies? on FB filled with encouraging and optimistic affirmations. My friend believed that TDL would be something that would be consistent with my current beliefs and that would resonate with my soul. And she was RIGHT!

I am writing you with a beautiful challenge that has been presented in my life. It is that of my current relationship. I want to write this email in the most positive and loving language as I am truly working on not putting any (further) negative energy into The Uni-verse regarding my relationship. Over two years ago I was blessed with the opportunity to re-connect with a past love. My current boyfriend and I met when we were in high school through a college prep program we were both involved in. In this program we were required to stay 6 weeks in the summer on a college campus, living in the dorms and getting a feel for college life. Personally, I hated the program because none of my close friends were apart of it and I felt it took the fun out of my summers and social life. The first summer I was to stay there I cried and begged my parents not to make me go. But then, the second summer (my sophomore year of high school) I met HIM. I was already in a relationship with a boy back home (he and I were together my entire four years of high school) but this boy was my summer love affair away from home. We never did so much as kiss but I had a huge crush on him, as did he on me. One of my fondest memories is of one of our summer dances where he requested the DJ play ?A Ribbon in the Sky? (Stevie Wonder) and we slow danced while he serenaded softly in my ear. I NEVER forgot that night.

Fast forward almost 20 years later my best friend convinced me to open a Face Book account. The second night of my page being active I searched for him, found him, and requested him as a friend. I followed the request with a message explaining who I was (certain that he would have forgotten). The first line of his reply was ?WOW, I was just searching for you last night??. The rest is history?or at least I thought for sure it could be?:)?A year later we were living together.

In the 20 years that we were apart many transitions had taken place in our individual lives. I had started college and became pregnant with my first child the first year. I left school (the school that he would enroll in the very next year) and enrolled at a university closer to home. I raised my daughter on my own and developed a very close circle of friends who were also single mothers. By the time I was 25 I had a second child in a second failed relationship and was graduating with my Masters degree in school counseling. Raising two daughters on my own and starting a career proved to be a most difficult yet most rewarding task. I casually dated but never stayed in any one situation for too long (whether it was good or bad). I became known by my friends as a ?runner? or run away bride type. I became very creative in sabotaging relationships. I was in love with love and addicted to the high that the newness can bring BUT once the relationships became ?work? and the euphoria had worn off I was out?falling out of love almost as fast as I had fallen in it.

His life experiences had been much different in that 20 years time. He had excelled in school, graduated with a full scholarship in an engineering program. Upon completion of the program he landed a six figure job with an engineering firm in the city he attended school. He worked there for five years before he realized that he hated it. He left the company and went into business for himself doing photography, visual, arts, and graphic design. His passions. In the time we spent apart he had no children, and had one serious relationship that ended after a year of dating. That relationship ended eight years before me. In the eight years he was single he says he focused on work and building his business. He casually dated but did not want a serious relationship as he saw it as a distraction to his work.

That brings us here to the present and my current life challenge. I AM MISERABLE in my relationship. He and I started off rocky as he was adamant about not wanting a relationship in the first place. However, he later said had it not been for my persistence and refusal to take no for an answer we would have never made it this far. In the beginning we faced many challenges but we had the newness of the relationship to pull us through it. We were wildly and passionately in love. There were many warning signs that we were headed for trouble but we ignored them all because we were IN LOVE and The Uni-verse had granted us this second chance, there had to be a reason!?!

Early on, he was extremely critical of me. He was constantly correcting me on things such as my spelling, my parenting, my driving, my smoking, my laugh (it?s a very loud laugh), how I cut carrots, etc. etc. I thought it was a bit odd but again I was head first, deep in love so, rather than question it, I did what any unaware, blindly in love, woman would do, I internalized it and made it all about ME. I had come to believe that he, with his engineering degree, his play it safe life, and his amazing ability to answer Jeopardy questions (or give questions to Jeopardy answers, however that show goes) was a sure sign that he was smarter and better than me. Of the many things that he would judge me own, my having two children by two different men was one of them (my ability to write that last sentence is evident of huge individual growth). This was a deep rooted insecurity of my own that I had masked for many years with degrees and work and ?I am ?a strong independent woman?. My friends thought I was the strongest, most secure, woman they knew. BUT I was hiding. I secretly hated myself for having two children out of wedlock and I carried a lot of guilt over what my life choices had done to my children. He blew that ?cover? right out of the water. He was constantly asking me how I arrived at this place in my life. He would start out conversations seemingly sincere and interested in my past but then once I would open up to him he would attack. He said in the middle of one of these conversations ?you weren?t the brightest crayon in the box back then?huh??

The irony in all of this, and the reason that I know our lives most difficult circumstances become our biggest teachable moments and those people that irritate us the most become our greatest teachers, is because his attacks on my character became the driving force behind my dealing with my own ?stuff?. I was forced to constantly defend myself to him. Which in turn forced me to defend myself to me. I started to face my insecurity and I began to resolve my issues with my past choices. My self-esteem grew and I was no longer questioning who I was as a person. I forgave myself for whatever it was I felt I had done wrong to my children. I was becoming a better parent, partner, and friend because I was letting go of past baggage and I was free to love. Love myself and love all those around me. I started sharing my growth and experiences on FB through daily epiphanies.

I could never really tell if his critical comments had died down or if because they no longer affected me the same it only appeared that way. Every once in awhile he would make a comment and I would call him out on it which created more of a strain on the relationship. Things hit a halt after a weekend in New York with him and my girls. I had excitedly planned this trip and it was his first time going to New York. I could hardly wait to show him around the city (I have taken my girls on this trip before). The night before we were to leave I was sitting over him and noticed he was reading a message on his phone from another woman. The entire thing turned out to be somewhat innocent but he had reached out to this former lover as she once lived in New York and he was asking her things we could do once there. For me, it put a damper on the trip, however, being aware of the power of my mind, I mentally turned things around in my head and focused back on my excitement. Once we arrived in the city we had many moments of what I can only describe as ?negativity?. For example I would be excited to show him something such as the ceiling in Grand Central Station and he would respond sarcastically with ?yeah, look at the floor?. My entire mood was altered by his energy and by the end of the trip I was DONE! Well, not done, done. The next day at work I Googled about some of the things we were going through and discovered a personality attachment style known as the ?emotionally avoidant?. Every article described what I had been experiencing in my relationship and when I raced home to share it with him, he couldn?t help but to agree.

That was two months ago. We?ve since discussed briefly how his mother was emotionally avoidant, how she was never really affectionate, and how in his family it was important to tell people what they did wrong and there was no real value in telling someone what they do right. In a couples counseling session he told the counselor ?she tells me she loves me at least 10 times a day, and that?s fine and all, but I really don?t see the point?if you tell me on Monday that you love me I assume it?s still true on Tuesday, so rather than telling me you love me everyday why not just tell me when you stop?? We left that counselor because even she seemed to be stumped. We also discussed the effect that his last (and only) real relationship may have had on him (a subject that he is not so comfortable talking about). We started seeing another counselor, this one really good, but couldn?t follow through after the first session due to the financial strain (I am the primary bread winner in our relationship with his business bringing in only enough to pay his personal bills).

Now, I am not sure what to do. We are defiantly at a crossroad. My instinct is to leave but because I still love him and I don?t want to fall into old patterns I stay. We have stopped talking about our issues, in fact we?ve pretty much stopped talking altogether. He said he was feeling overwhelmed with TDL articles, my extremely LONG emails to him about us, and my constant urging to deal with our ?stuff?. He says that he understands the things I am saying but he doesn?t know what to do with it all. I feel as though he is withdrawing and I also feel that my efforts to make him more AWARE of his own issues are resembling the very same judgment and criticism that he has offered me, the non-accepting kind of love that once made me feel weak, low, and unworthy. This is not at all my intention.

I guess in closing what I am seeking is some advice on how to continue with my own evolution and growth while also accepting where he is in his life, even if where he is in life seems to be draining and wearing on me. I make a conscious effort to not allow his energy to affect my own energy but it is very difficult and some days I can?t do it at all. I realize that he needs my love and acceptance more now than ever but some days I don?t feel it?s fair. He is a good man and he would do ANYthing for me and my girls but when it comes to expressing his feelings, showing affection, giving a complement, or tucking my youngest daughter in for bed at night, he can not do it. I feel like we are co-existing, like roommates, there is no passion, no excitement, no emotional support or engagement. Those are things that I have always naturally given in relationships, but now I find myself unmotivated. I grow tired of ALWAYS having to be the one to initiate a conversation, or a hug, or sex. I am becoming resentful that I support him and offer praise and affirmation and do not get that in return. I am starting to fantasize about what it would be like to be with another man. A man who could compliment me and take me dancing without saying he is embarrassed because I don?t have any rhythm. I truly do not know what else I can do.

I started this email by saying I was writing about a beautiful challenge in my life and I say that because I do believe that there is a GREAT lesson in all of this. I have already learned so much. I am certain that we will both come through this as better people whether we stay together or not.

I am not sure who the hell would take the time to read all of this email as I am just now realizing exactly how long I?ve been writing. If I never receive an answer to it, this email will still have served as very therapeutic anyway. Just a way of getting it all out! A cleansing of sorts. However, if you do find yourself at the close of this letter and have any advice to offer it would be greatly appreciated.

I am thankful that TDL has come into my life. Mastin, you have been wonderful for me and for others. Don?t ever stop doing what you do! I have come to believe that there is no pre-determined path we are all walking other than our own individual paths to greatness and being better people. There are many, many paths to that. I am blessed to be on this journey, obstacles and all!

Sending peace and blessings my love!

Defiant strikers get ultimatum after S.Africa mine shootings

Platinum giant Lonmin on Sunday ordered employees back to work at a South African mine where police killed 34 people, but miners remained defiant as a week of national mourning was declared.

The London-listed company issued an ultimatum to workers to end a wildcat strike by Monday after the worst episode of police violence since the apartheid era, which President Jacob Zuma said will be officially mourned for seven days.

Lonmin said the call to staff was "a last opportunity to return to work" at its shut-down Marikana mine where union rivalry escalated into a police crackdown and more bloodshed on Thursday after 10 people died just days earlier.

"Employees could therefore be dismissed if they fail to heed the final ultimatum," warned the world's number three platinum producer.

But miners who first downed tools at the Marikana mine on August 10 pledged to press on with their wage demands, and called the order to return to work "an insult" to colleagues who were gunned down by police.

"Expecting us to go back is like an insult. Many of our friends and colleagues are dead, then they expect us to resume work. Never," said worker Zachariah Mbewu.

"Some are in prison and hospitals. Tomorrow we are going back to the mountain (protest site), not underground, unless management gives us what we want."

Lonmin's Monday deadline for miners to return to work will coincide with the start of a week-long national mourning announced Sunday by Zuma.

Flags will be lowered to half mast and an official day for nationwide memorial services held on Thursday.

"The nation is in shock and in pain. We must this week reflect on the sanctity of human life and the right to life as enshrined in the Constitution of the republic," said Zuma.

"We must avoid fingerpointing and recrimination. We must unite against violence from whatever quarter. We must reaffirm our belief in peace, stability and order and in building a caring society free of crime and violence," he said.

The fiery former leader of the ruling party's youth wing, Julius Malema, fanned workers' anger Saturday with a speech attacking Zuma, whom he wants voted out at the African National Congress's year-end party elections.

"President Zuma decided over the massacre of our people, he must step down," Malema, who was booted out of the ANC in April for fomenting divisions in its ranks, told a crowd.

The violence at the mine stems from a conflict between the powerful National Union of Mineworkers and the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), which is calling for a tripling of wages.

Thursday's crackdown left 34 dead, 78 wounded and 259 detained, and boosted the death toll to 44 after the 10 earlier deaths which included two police officers.

The violent police action has drawn parallels to the brutality seen under apartheid and sparked debate over the living conditions faced by miners, who voiced indignation at Lonmin's ultimatum.

"Are they also going to fire the ones who are in hospitals and lying in mortuaries?" asked Thapelo Modima.

"It is better to be fired anyway because we are suffering, our lives won't change. Lonmin does not care about our well-being, they have so far refused to hear us out, only sending police to kill us."

Workers say they are waiting to hear from mine bosses, whose ultimatum Sunday was an extension of a previous order to return.

"Tomorrow we won't return to work unless they listen to our demands of salary increases," said underground supervisor Fezile Magxaba.

"People have died, we are angry. If we return it will be like they died in vain," he said while doing his laundry at a communal tap.

Churches in poor settlements surrounding the mine held services on Sunday, with relatives milling outside the hospital to check if their loved ones had been admitted there, or to find out if they had been arrested or worse were among the dead.

Police have claimed self-defence and several probes have been launched, including Zuma announcing a judicial commission of inquiry.

A team of his ministers will also head to Marikana on Monday to "coordinate and lead all support" to grieving families.

Dems slam Ryan over Social Security privatization

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats are eagerly renewing their fight against privatizing Social Security now that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Paul Ryan as his running mate. It was a fight that didn't go well for the GOP when President George W. Bush pushed the idea in 2005.

In his 2010 "Road Map for America's Future," the Wisconsin congressman proposed a plan to allow younger workers to divert more than one-third of their Social Security taxes into personal accounts that they would own and could will to their heirs.

Ryan wrote that the accounts would provide workers an opportunity "to build a significant nest egg for retirement that far exceeds what the current program can provide." Workers 55 and older would stay in the current system.

Romney hasn't embraced the proposal and Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, didn't include it in either of the federal budgets passed by House Republicans the past two years. But now that Ryan is running for vice president, Democrats hope to capitalize on the issue.

Bush's proposal for private accounts received a chilly reception from members in both parties in Congress, though Ryan embraced it. Democrats used the issue against GOP congressional candidates in the 2006 election, when they regained control of the House and Senate.

"The very last thing we ought to be doing is putting at risk the retirement security of millions of America's seniors," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, who heads the Democratic National Committee.

Until now, Social Security had been largely absent from the presidential campaign. President Barack Obama has yet to lay out a detailed plan for addressing the issue, and his silence is drawing criticism from advocates who supported him in the past. Romney has been more forthcoming with proposals, but Social Security has not been a big part of his campaign, either.

Romney, in his book, "No Apology," said he liked the idea of personal accounts. But, he wrote, "Given the volatility of investment values that we have just experienced, I would prefer that individual accounts were added to Social Security, not diverted from it, and that they were voluntary."

Romney's current plan for Social Security doesn't mention personal accounts. Instead, he proposes a gradual increase in the retirement age to account for growing life expectancy. For future generations, Romney would slow the growth of benefits "for those with higher incomes."

Romney says tax increases should be off the table, and current beneficiaries and those near retirement should be spared from cuts.

"Mitt Romney and Paul support gradual reforms to Social Security that protect current beneficiaries from any benefit disruptions while strengthening the program to ensure that it doesn't go bankrupt," Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams said.

The trustees who oversee Social Security say the trust funds that support the program will run dry in 2033. At that point, Social Security will generate only enough tax revenue to pay about 75 percent of benefits, triggering automatic cuts unless Congress acts.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama said he wanted to improve Social Security's finances by applying the payroll tax to annual wages above $250,000. It is now limited to wages below $110,100, a level that increases with inflation.

Obama also pledged to oppose raising the retirement age or reducing annual cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs. "Let me be clear, I will not do either," Obama said at the time.

Last year, however, Obama put on the table a proposal to reduce annual COLAs during deficit-reduction talks with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. The talks ultimately failed and nothing came of the proposal, but it raised questions about whether Obama would honor his 2008 pledge.

"A national politician would do well to strongly identify themselves with Social Security, not just with rhetoric, but to be very clear that they understand the pain people are experiencing today, that they stand behind this program and they will protect the citizenry and they will not cut benefits," said Eric Kingson, a Syracuse University professor who co-founded Social Security Works. "I hope to hear that from the White House. I have not heard that yet."

Obama offered some principles to strengthen Social Security in his 2011 State of the Union address.

"We must do it without putting at risk current retirees, the most vulnerable or people with disabilities, without slashing benefits for future generations and without subjecting Americans' guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market," Obama said in the speech.

Last week, Vice President Joe Biden made a more sweeping guarantee during a campaign swing in southern Virginia, telling a customer at a diner that Social Security will not be changed.

"I guarantee you, flat guarantee you, there will be no changes in Social Security," Biden told the customer, according to a White House pool report. "I flat guarantee you."

A Biden adviser said later the vice president was merely reassuring the woman that her benefits would not be changed. The adviser spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the issue.

Obama campaign spokesman Adam Fetcher said the president "has put forward a set of principles to guide bipartisan action to strengthen it for future generations. Rather than laying the groundwork for a bipartisan approach as the president has done, Mitt Romney's only solution would mean deep benefit cuts for future retirees. His running mate, Paul Ryan was an architect of privatization."

Romney's campaign chided Obama's inaction.

"His failure to lead on entitlements has put the future of Social Security at risk," said Williams, the Romney spokesman. "Mitt Romney is committed to ensuring that Social Security is there for future generations and he has a comprehensive plan to save Social Security with commonsense reforms."

Tommy Haas climbing the ranking ladder once again: (Part One ...

Tommy Haas climbing the ranking ladder once again:?(Part One)?? Tennis Special?

Former world number two, Tommy Haas, has been slowly moving towards the top of rankings and if he continues to play like this, there are chances that he will enter the Top-10 once again.

Tennis has seen very few players as talented as this German. He is a versatile player, who can be a threat for his rivals on any surface. His single handed back hand is a treat to watch at a times when almost all the players on the ATP World Tour play it two-handed.

However, luck has played many time with the Hamburg born athlete. His career came to a halt on a couple of timee due to different reasons.

Haas is from the same crop of players from which the best player in the history of the sport, Roger Federer, belongs. The German had joined the list of elite players even before Federer, as he had started to reach title matches back in 1997. He grabbed his first crown in 1999 and the added four more in 2001. The German player?s consistent performance on all the surfaces throughout the season ?took him among the top two players in the world at the start of 2002.

However, a tragic accident happened with Haas? parents at that moment, which resulted in his father falling in a coma. The German star stopped playing tennis and started to take care of his parents.

Remembering the accident, Haas had said, ''My girlfriend was crying and all I heard was that there was a motorcycle accident. Right away, I knew it was my parents. At that moment, my head froze. I'm thinking about them all the time. My dad has a long road ahead.?
