Repairing Minor Concrete Cracks - Catalog Favorites

When you pave your driveway, patio, sidewalk, or any other area around your home with concrete, you should not see any cracks develop, but they can. Two of the main reasons that cracks can form is because the compression in the ground that is underneath before you pour the concrete may not be adequate or where your expansion joints are there was improper construction. It does make the area look ugly but you can fix the cracks.

If the crack is less than three millimeters, this is considered a medium crack and is not hard to repair. The first thing that you want to do is to detach any loose flakes of concrete. To do this takes a hammer, chisel, and gently beat on the cracked area or you can use a screwdriver to loosen the flakes. After you remove the chips, you take the wire brush and use it on the surface to make sure all the debris and dust is off.

Using a garden hose, the old concrete needs to be moistened for a few hours with water. The reason that you need to do this is to make sure that the concrete does not take any extra water from your patching grout making the grout dry. The concrete needs to be damp but make sure you are not leaving any water standing on the concrete. You can get the compound for patching from your local home improvement or hardware store. Using water you make a paste that is thick, but make sure that you follow the manufacturer?s instructions on how to make it.

To improve the flexibility and strength for expansion, add latex additive and put the compound over the concrete crack. You can use a putty knife to do this. Make sure that you smooth the surface before the mixture hardens. Let it dry for up to 3 hours. Then, cover it with plastic sheeting. It needs to be kept covered for five days in order for it to harden totally before using.
