Derek Armstrong perfect pick to coach CHL's new Denver Cutthroats
Derek "Army" Armstrong sees the Central Hockey League's Denver Cutthroats as an "NHL-run organization on a CHL budget." And his job? "I'm the head coach of a professional hockey team. Doesn't matter what level, what league." (Karl Gehring, The Denver Post)
Rookie coach Derek Armstrong's infectious high- octane personality is bound to filter down to his players and fans of the new Denver Cutthroats of the Central Hockey League. His character traits certainly rubbed off on his NHL teammates.
For Colorado hockey fans who adored former Avalanche winger Ian Laperriere, consider that "Lappy" and "Army" were best buddies while playing for the Los Angeles Kings in the early 2000s, before Lappy came to the Avs.
Although retired from playing, they remain rugged, old-school rink rats who can't get enough of the game they love. They are natural leaders who take pride in teaching others the value of hockey.
"I think Army's going to be a great coach," Laperriere said from his home in the Philadelphia area, where he is director of player development for the Flyers. "He's very passionate about the game and about life. When you bring that to any level, it's a recipe for success. And he has experience everywhere ? in the minors and in the NHL. He's going to be great."
Armstrong played for 15 teams over a 17-year professional career. That he was never traded speaks to his popularity.
"Hockey is my life. Nothing I wanted to do more than be a hockey player, and I'm proud to call myself a hockey player," said Armstrong, who played in 477 NHL games for the Kings, Islanders, Rangers, Senators and Blues. "I'm probably one of the biggest rink rats you ever met. I was always the first one to get to the rink, the first one to make fun of everyone in the dressing room and the last one to leave."
Armstrong, 39, took pride in everything he did, particularly when young teammates were watching. And he felt like a proud uncle when he watched young Kings players Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty hoist the Stanley Cup in June.
"I taught those guys how to be pros," Armstrong said.
Armstrong is excited to mentor young players from a different perspective. The native of Ottawa played for the Denver Grizzlies of the International Hockey League in 1994-95, when he met his wife, Shannon, who attended Chatfield High School in Littleton. They have two sons, Dawson, 12, and Easton, 9, and have maintained a Colorado home since they were married.
Armstrong was forced to retire because of concussions in 2010 after playing one year for the St. Louis Blues. Beginning his coaching career in Denver is a perfect opportunity for a man whose goal is to coach in the NHL.
"I want to build a program here, learn as much as I can," Armstrong said. "I didn't get to win the Stanley Cup as a player, and that was always my dream. I want to win a Stanley Cup one day. When you're done being a hockey player, you think everyone is going to love you and offer you jobs, but it's tough getting in this side of the game."
The Cutthroats have a "double-A" affiliation agreement with the Avalanche and, unlike the NHL and its labor issues, they are guaranteed to begin play in October at the reconditioned Denver Coliseum.
"We're going to be an NHL-run organization on a CHL budget," Armstrong said. "I've never been an ego type of guy. I'm the head coach of a professional hockey team. Doesn't matter what level, what league. I had a couple looks last year in the AHL, but I didn't want to move my family. This is a great setup with my family and they allow me to get in the business meetings and other stuff. I'm just taking in all the knowledge."

New species of spiders will hook you
A group of cave explorers and scientists have made a rare discovery: an entirely new taxonomic family of spider in the caves of southern Oregon.
Only two other spider families (the taxonomic group above both genus and species) have been found since 1990, and this is the first newly discovered, native one uncovered in North America since 1890, said California Academy of Sciences researcher Charles Griswold, lead author of the study that described the species.
So far, the family consists only of the one species described, which the researchers named Trogloraptor marchingtoni. The species is named after Neil Marchington, a member of the Western Cave Conservancy, who first discovered the spider. The genus name, Trogloraptor, means "cave robber."
It's an apt name for a spider with unique hooks, or claws, on its legs, which the researchers believe are used to snatch flying insects, like midges, out of the air. With its legs outstretched, the spider measures up to 3 inches (8 centimeters) long.
"They're biggish," Griswold said. "But when you're in a cave and it's dark and there's only the beam of your head lamp, they look much bigger. It's quite astonishing to see them hanging from a few threads." [Gallery: Spooky Spiders]
Griswold and his colleagues think that the newly discovered spiders hang from the underside of caves on simple webs, waiting to snatch a meal with their astonishing sicklelike legs. The few specimens Griswold and his graduate student Tracy Audisio have reared in the lab, though, haven't eaten anything. "It seems very shy," Griswold told OurAmazingPlanet.
The spider also has poisonous glands, although there's no evidence that it is dangerous to humans.
Griswold said this discovery could help explain why there are legends about giant spiders living in caves in this region. And perhaps there are other similar species yet to be found; many caves, especially in the western United States, remain little studied.
Finding a new family like this is a historic moment for the field. "It is just as fascinating to arachnologists as the discovery of a new dinosaur is to paleontologists," said spider expert Norman Platnick at the American Museum of Natural History. Platnick was not involved in the discovery or description of the new species.
Another unusual thing about the spider is that it has two rows of teeth, or serrula. "I don't recall seeing any other spiders with that kind of serrula," Platnick told OurAmazingPlanet.
Currently, there are only 111 recognized spider families. New families get added in one of two ways. The more common way is by studying a group that has already been described, and discovering that its relationships are not what had been previously thought, Platnick said. Less common is a case like Trogloraptor, where a new family is established when the animal is first described, he said.

The spider was first found by citizen scientists from the Western Cave Conservancy and taken to Audisio, who showed it to Griswold. At first, they thought it was a brown recluse, a poisonous type of spider. But closer examination revealed it was unique, and they spent two years determining that it is a new family. Their results were published Friday in the journal ZooKeys.

Shares in African miner Lonmin dive after violence
LONDON (AP) ? Shares in platinum miner Lonmin PLC fell as much as 8 percent Friday after it was revealed Friday that South African police officers killed more than 30 striking miners at the company's platinum mine.
Since violence broke out last weekend at the Marikana mine, 60 miles (100 kms) west of Pretoria, shares have fallen by as much as 20 percent, wiping some 390 million pounds ($610 million) off the company's market value.
Lonmin shares fell as low as 595 pence in early trading Friday before recovering by late morning to 640 pence, down 1.1 percent. The company, the world's third-largest platinum miner, has also been hit by Thursday's announcement that Chief Executive Ian Farmer is hospitalized with a serious illness.
The company has estimated that it has lost 15,000 ounces of platinum equivalent in unprocessed ore because of the strike.
Platinum is mainly mined for the manufacture of catalytic converters, which are used to lower exhaust emissions in cars, but it is also used in jewelry, spark plugs and electrodes. The metal was trading at $1,433 a troy ounce on the open market Friday, up $39 on the day.
Lonmin warned Thursday that it was unlikely to meet its production targets for the year "although the extent of the variation from guidance will depend on the timing and speed with which normal operations can safely resume".
The company also said it expected unit costs to rise faster than planned as well.
"Provided that the strike can be resolved and the mine returned to full production within two weeks there should be no impact on longer-term forecasts," Alison Turner, analyst at Panmure Gordon & Co., said Friday.
"With downstream processing operations less affected by the strike and the company having built up significant inventories of metal in concentrate earlier in the year, we believe refined production could be slightly higher as the company runs down metal-in-process."

Friday, August 10th, six U.S. troops were killed by Afghan allies in two separate incidents. Thursday, August 16th, 7 U.S. troops were killed in a Black Hawk helicopter crash in Afghanistan. A man wearing an Afghan police uniform opened fire on U.S. troops in southwestern Afghanistan on Friday, killing two service members.
U.S. troops returning from the war in the Middle East continue to suffer. Suicides have reached a record high. According to the most recent Pentagon data, 244,217 U.S. military men and women have been diagnosed with TBI [traumatic brain injury], often caused by one or more exposures to bomb blasts. Thousands more are believed to have experienced undiagnosed mild brain damage from blast injuries.
As I have said before, the Soviets tried to control Afghanistan for 10 years and 100,000 troops with no luck. Is it time to pull out of Afghanistan?
